In Mayoral Race for Los Angeles, Rick Caruso Heads to Runoff

New York Times: Rick Caruso, a billionaire real estate developer, and Representative Karen Bass are heading to a November runoff election to become mayor of Los Angeles, in a race that has focused on voters’ worries about public safety and homelessness in the nation’s second-largest city. Though neither candidate earned more than 50 percent of the vote, which would have allowed them to win outright on Tuesday, they both comfortably outperformed their opponents (New York Times).

California Governor Gavin Newsom to Face Republican Brian Dahle in November

Dahle is a State Senator from Northern California. KTLA: State Senator Brian Dahle (R-Bieber) will face California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) in November’s gubernatorial contest. Newsom won 60.8% of the state’s voters and Dahle 15.2% of the vote, according to preliminary election returns (KTLA). Axios: Retired U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Michael Franken bested former U.S. Rep. Abby Finkenauer to score the Democratic nomination for Iowa’s U.S. Senate seat on Tuesday and will run against Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley in November. Grassley, one of the longest-serving members in Senate history, has held the seat since 1981 and has never received less than 60% of the vote in his re-election bids (Axios). NPR: Former television meteorologist Mark Ronchetti has come out ahead in a crowded field to claim victory in the New Mexico GOP primary for governor… He’ll take on Democratic incumbent Michelle Lujan Grisham in November. Though Ronchetti led the five-way Republican race in fundraising, according to campaign finance reports from the secretary of state’s office, he raised less than half of what Gov. Lujan Grisham brought in for the primary contest, where she ran unopposed (NPR). Hill: With the nomination locked up, Noem will go on to face state House Minority Leader Jamie Smith (D) in the November general election, though she is widely expected to win (Hill).

San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin Recalled From Office

New York Times: Voters in San Francisco on Tuesday put an end to one of the country’s most pioneering experiments in criminal justice reform, ousting a district attorney who eliminated cash bail, vowed to hold police accountable and worked to reduce the number of people sent to prison. Chesa Boudin, the progressive district attorney, was removed after two and a half years in office, according to The Associated Press, in a vote that is set to reverberate through Democratic politics nationwide as the party fine-tunes its messaging on crime before midterm elections that threaten to strip Democratic control over Congress (New York Times).

Biden’s Solar Panel Policy Blatant Misuse of Power

Federalist: Joe Biden has invoked the Defense Production Act to expedite the production of solar panels. Not only is the president’s decree a transparently illegal abuse of executive power, it promises to achieve the opposite of what the law intended. The Defense Production Act gives the president authority “to prepare for and respond to military conflicts, natural or man-caused disasters, or acts of terrorism within the United States,” not the power to create industrial policy out of the ether that rewards his favored sector of the economy. Not even the most capricious or self-serving reading of the Defense Production Act could justify the idea that helping to build solar panel components is a response to a military conflict, a disaster, or an act of terrorism (Federalist). National Review: Given the broad authority available to the executive under Section 303, the law has a financial limit: Projects authorized under Section 303 that cumulatively cost over $50 million require congressional approval. In the past, very few such projects have ever exceeded that threshold, the CRS notes. But the president does have the authority to waive that financial limit if the actions he authorizes are, in his judgment, “necessary to avert an industrial resource or critical technology item shortfall that would severely impair national defense capability.” Biden waived that limit in each of yesterday’s five memoranda, meaning the executive branch now has the power to spend and subsidize as much as it wants without any input from Congress whatsoever (National Review).

Pro-Choice Activists Firebomb Third Pregnancy Center

CBN: A pro-life medical office and pregnancy center in Buffalo, New York was firebombed early Tuesday morning by radical abortion advocates. CompassCare, a Christ-centered organization dedicated to erasing the need for abortion, said it sustained heavy damage to its building (CBN). Life News: Graffiti on the building left by the arsonists refers to the abortion terrorist group Jane’s Revenge reading, “Jane Was Here.” The group took responsibility for a firebombing of a pro-life organization in Madison, Wisconsin in May, and it could have been responsible for bombing the offices of Oregon Right to Life during the same month. It has also vandalized and destroyed multiple churches and pregnancy centers (Life News). National Review: The string of rampages by the group comes after the surprise leak of a Supreme Court draft majority opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark decision that legalized abortion on a national level. The Department of Homeland Security is reportedly preparing for more unrest after the release of the official opinion. An unclassified May 13 memo by DHS’ intelligence bureau projected that threats to the Supreme Court justices, members of Congress, and other public officials, clergy and health care providers “are likely to persist and may increase leading up to and following the issuing of the Court’s official ruling” (National Review).

Despite Governor’s Opposition, Louisiana Bars Trans Athletes From Competing Against Women

USA Today: Transgender athletes are banned from competing on girls and women’s sports teams after Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards allowed a bill to become law Monday despite saying he was opposed to the legislation. Edwards, who vetoed a similar bill last year, said the law was inevitable because of it’s overwhelming support in the House and Senate. He allowed it to become law without his signature. “It was obvious to me after two years it was going to become law whether or not I signed or vetoed the bill,” Edwards said Monday night. Republican Franklinton Sen. Beth Mizell has been working for two years to pass the transgender sports ban (USA Today). Townhall: “Women have worked too hard for too long to get to the competitive level we have attained to now face an unfair playing field,” Mizell said. Democrats opposed to the legislation described it as an “attack” on children. During a debate, state Republican Rep. Laurie Schlegel pointed to biological male “transgender” swimmer Will “Lia” Thomas as an example of why legislation protecting women’s sports is popping up across the country (Townhall).

Oregon’s Decriminalization of Drugs Backfires, Leading to Staggering Increase in Overdoses and Deaths

Washington Examiner: Oregon state officials are admitting that a 2020 ballot measure to decriminalize drugs has failed as overdoses skyrocket and appropriated funds remain unspent. Testimony before the House Committee on Behavior Health on Thursday painted a grim picture of Oregon’s efforts to encourage self-help in lieu of incarceration. “When the voters of Oregon passed Measure 110, we did so because it was a change of policy in Oregon to improve the lives of people, to improve our communities,” Secretary of State Shemia Fagan testified. “And in the years since, we haven’t seen that play out. Instead… we’ve seen the problem with drug addiction get worse.” Republican state Rep. Lily Morgan said her community had seen a 700% increase in overdoses and a 120% increase in deaths (Washington Examiner).

Sen. Debbie Stabenow Fuels Debate as She Boasts About Bypassing High Gas Prices in Her Costly EV

The rest of the country is bearing $4.87 average per gallon, with some states passing the $5 and even $6 mark. Fox News: Senator Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., incensed conservatives on Twitter Tuesday while bragging that she doesn’t have to worry about high gas prices because she drives an electric car. Stabenow also claimed she can’t wait for more Americans to “move to vehicles that aren’t going to be dependent on the whims of the oil companies.” The senator’s comments came during Tuesday’s Senate Finance Committee hearing which featured testimony from United States Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. Yellen was called to clarify the Biden administration’s approach to tackling the high level of inflation and gas prices Americans are currently facing (Fox News). RNC Research: Michigan Democrat Sen. Debbie Stabenow brags that she passed “every single gas station” in her brand new electric vehicle, “and it didn’t matter how high [gas] was.” The average cost of an electric vehicle is more than $56,000 (Twitter). CNBC: The average transaction price for an electric vehicle (EV) is $56,437, according to Kelley Blue Book — roughly $10,000 higher than the overall industry average of $46,329 that includes gas and EVs. In terms of pricing, an EV is equivalent to an entry-level luxury car (CNBC). Townhall: While the Biden administration has sought to blame others for rising gas prices, including “oil companies,” as Sen. Stabenow referenced, it’s worth reminding that Biden canceled the Keystone XL pipeline via executive order on his first day in office (Townhall). California Senator Plans to Introduce Legislation Adding “Drag Queen 101” to K-12 Education

Daily Wire: A California Democrat behind the state’s law softening sex offender requirements for sodomy with minors suggested Tuesday that he would introduce additional legislation adding “Drag Queen 101” to school curriculums. Scott Wiener, a gay politician who represents San Francisco, weighed in Tuesday on Republican Texas Rep. Bryan Slaton’s promise to introduce legislation banning children from drag shows after pictures of children attending a drag show in a Texas bar went viral (Daily Wire). Senator Scott Wiener: This guy just gave me a bill idea: Offering Drag Queen 101 as part of the K-12 curriculum. Attending Drag Queen Story Time will satisfy the requirement (Twitter).

Dennis Prager questions the utility and morality of an entire society wearing masks

I ended the last hour with a statement about masks. It needs to be remembered by all of you who understand the uselessness of masks. When you are told by the know-nothings, “Oh, you’re so selfish. What difference does it make? You wear a mask, it protects others.” This notion of what...

Brandon Tatum takes on Pride Month and drag shows for kids

Officer Tatum: Let’s talk about this. The LGBTQ agenda is not an agenda of loving who you love. Most people who just want to be left alone and love who they love. They are living their lives, not thinking twice about some pride month. The others are pushing sexual immorality. This has nothing to...

Charlie Kirk: I want to talk kind of about gun control and push back against a lot of Biden’s kind of incoherent ramblings about this. It would be not even newsworthy if Joe Biden didn’t have power, but he does have power. And Joe Biden is going to try to pass some form of federal gun...
