Hello,

A great honor has been bestowed on me. Tonight, I officially became the Democratic nominee for Senate in Iowa against Chuck Grassley.

This is a victory for all Democrats and for all Iowans calling for change.

I wouldn’t be sending you this email without the incredible backing of my family, our team, our incredible volunteers, and of course, supporters like you from across the entire country. Thank you.

I want to thank and congratulate my fellow Democrats, Abby Finkenauer and Glenn Hurst, on a good, honorable primary race. We kept it professional, for which I am proud, and I look forward to working alongside them and my fellow Democratic candidates to win up and down the ballot all across Iowa.

Iowa Democrats have spoken, and now we look toward holding Chuck Grassley accountable on November 8th and finally retiring him after 47 years.

There is so much at stake in this year’s election. Iowa and our nation are facing so many challenges and difficult problems that demand bold leadership and innovative solutions.

Democracy is under attack here at home and abroad. It’s time to hold the GOP insurrectionists accountable, and we must not forget the war against authoritarianism that the people in Ukraine are still fighting against Putin.

We need to finally address gun violence by taking on the NRA – not taking their blood money – and passing meaningful gun reform. After 36 years in the Navy, I know what weapons of war are capable of, and no one (especially not Chuck Grassley) is going to gun-splain me on this issue. It’s time for real action to save lives.

For too long, we’ve been under the ‘minority rule’ of Mitch McConnell and his obstruction. If we are going to codify Roe v Wade, pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, or take bold action against climate change, the filibuster must go. I will be that 51st vote to set it aside and get the Senate working again.

I am so proud that we’ve funded our campaign with the support of over 66,000 grassroots donors like you and without one dime of corporate PAC money. Iowa needs a Senator who will work on behalf of Iowans, not corporate interests. I promise I will never be bought by special interests, and that includes Big Pharma and the insurance industry…

Because it’s time we pass universal health care so that everyone has the same kind of quality health care my family and I had when I was in the Navy. Whether you call it a single-payer system, Medicare for All, or something else – it’s time. Let’s do it.

The road ahead is not going to be easy. Chuck Grassley has taken millions of dollars from corporations and special interest groups, and Mitch McConnell has raised millions more into Super PACs to attack me. I bet Fox ‘Entertainment’ News is figuring out what lies to tell about me right now.

But I’m a hard target for the GOP. Chuck Grassley has never faced an opponent like me before. We are going to send Grassley packing, and we are going to do it by turning out Democrats, winning independents, and even swaying the pro-democracy Republicans I hear from every day.

I am ready for the fight, and I am so grateful to know I can count on your support along the way.

Thank you for everything you’ve done and will continue to do through November.

Mike Franken, U.S. Navy (ret.)
