With the Senate split 50-50, Mitch McConnell only needs to flip one seat to reclaim the majority and turn the chamber back into a legislative graveyard — and it could all come down to Wisconsin.

The Cook Political Report has named Ron Johnson’s race one of a handful of toss-ups that could decide control of the Senate majority — meaning Wisconsin’s Senate race will be one of the most expensive and competitive battlegrounds in the country. And right-wing groups are already spending tens of millions of dollars to flood the airwaves and tilt the scales in Johnson’s favor.

I won’t sugarcoat it, folks, we’ve got a tough fight ahead of us. Our eventual Democratic nominee for Senate will need a whole lot of resources to overcome mountains of right-wing spending and attacks to flip this seat. And they’ll face another unique challenge on top of that. Wisconsin’s primary election isn't until August 9th — less than three months before Election Day.

While Ron Johnson spends these next few months building up his campaign account, we need to be doing the same for our nominee. That’s why Wisconsin Democrats created the Wisconsin Senate Democratic Nominee Fund to build resources for the eventual Democratic nominee, so they’re prepared to hit the ground running on August 10th, defeat Ron Johnson, and protect our Democratic Senate majority.
