** Farming, Ranching, & the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA)

Farmers have undoubtedly faced their share of challenges since the Trump Administrations trade war with China. Today, our farmers still have some barriers in place which makes it more difficult to sell their products to our northern neighbors, Canada, and our southern neighbors, Mexico. Currently, they are America’s largest trade partners with $4 billion a day of trade between the three countries.
According to the AFBT (2019), “The required International Trade Commission economic impact report on USMCA was released on April 18, 2019. It projects that USMCA when fully implemented, will add $2.2 billion to the amount of agricultural and food exports to Canada and Mexico.” ([link removed]) This is a windfall of economic resources that help both the farmers and the American people. Regulations, however, which hinder such trade, do not help farmers during a time they need it the most, and also hinder such expansion and increase.
Further, farmers and ranchers want to be able to make decisions about managing their land and water resources without uncertainty or time-consuming and expensive red tape as existing with cumbersome regulations. Such hindrances must be addressed and rectified.

American farmers and ranchers must continually be supported as they are foundational to who we are as a nation and one of the greatest sources of our future viability. They are producing food that keeps America going. In order to provide immediate and long-term support, we must:
1. From a Congressional perspective, pass the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
2. Fight against regulatory overreach of Congress and work to reform the federal regulatory process while preserving the farmers’ and ranchers’ land-use and water rights.
3. Ensure the Administrative Procedure Act, which governs how regulations are set forth, is updated from its 1946 version.
4. Strive to create a new guest worker program that can address shortages in agriculture workers amongst the American workforce.

“The food and agriculture industry supports more than 21 million U.S. jobs (that’s 11 percent of U.S. jobs), and contributed $1.05 trillion to U.S. gross domestic product in 2016 (AFBF, 2019).” ([link removed]) [link removed] when the farmers and ranchers are doing well, Americans do well, as those workers provide food security and jobs as well.
