Hi John,
No students should have to fear being singled out, harassed, or discriminated against simply because of their gender. Every student deserves to feel welcomed, supported, and protected in their learning environments. With Title IX’s historic passage 50 years ago, we’re closer to making that a reality.
This month marks the 50th anniversary of the groundbreaking civil rights law, Title IX. We’re celebrating this historic legislation that has positively impacted the lives of millions of people, providing a pathway to achieving gender equity in education, and broader society. But there’s more that we can do.
In partnership with the Women’s Sports Foundation and the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative, the National Women’s Law Center has launched Demand IX—a pledge for students, advocates and supporters to express their commitment to strong Title IX protections and enforcement.
The impact of Title IX is significant, but in the years since its passage, opponents have stopped at nothing to weaken these crucial civil rights protections, including undoing critical safeguards against harassment.
For so long, opponents have misrepresented the values that inspired Congress to pass this instrumental law decades ago. Title IX is about fairness, equality, and justice. Title IX at its best benefits everyone. We are stronger together when Title IX lives up to its original promise and full potential.
It’s time to be courageous—and to defend schools as welcoming places so students can focus on imagination, knowledge, and exploration. We must push decision-makers on every level of government to NOT give into baseless and dangerous attacks from right-wing extremists. The safety and future of our students depend on it.
Take the pledge: Demand IX.
In solidarity,
