I recently spoke with a woman in her 60s from her bed in a hospital trauma ward in Ukraine. She’d been shot while walking with her hands up. As she told her story, I teared up. She wiped her own tears, held my hand and said, “Thank you very much.” I wanted to hug her, but with all the equipment, I could only squeeze her hand and smile.

During my time in Ukraine, I met many survivors like that woman and the dedicated health professionals working night and day to care for them. And I returned home even more determined to help.

What I witnessed in Ukraine was devastating. Russian forces have attacked more than 100 health facilities, even those marked with red crosses to show they are medical relief centers. Brave doctors, nurses and support staff have remained to care for the sick, traumatized and injured. They are performing miracles with limited resources — and they urgently need our support…
