Friends, we all knew the end of this Supreme Court term would be awful. But I don’t think anything could have prepared me for how it feels to start seeing the right-wing justices’ attacks on our fundamental rights coming to fruition.

Friends, we all knew the end of this Supreme Court term would be awful. But I don’t think anything could have prepared me for how it feels to start seeing the right-wing justices’ attacks on our fundamental rights coming to fruition.

One of these attacks I’m sure you’ve heard about by now: a leaked draft opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Supreme Court case involving Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban, signals that there are five votes on the Court to overturn Roe v. Wade.

This moment is why Republicans stole the Supreme Court majority — and Justice Alito’s draft language proves it. The opinion was cruel. It was vindictive. And its potential consequences are absolutely devastating.

But now is not the time to give up. Abortion is still legal, the vast majority of Americans support the right to abortion, and we’re not going to stop fighting to enact the only structural reform that can immediately rein in this out of control Court: Supreme Court expansion.

The calls to expand the Court have only grown louder since the leak. Last month Sarah joined the Mehdi Hasan show on MSNBC to discuss growing momentum for Court reform in the days following the leaked opinion.

State-based abortion advocates from 11 different states have come together to endorse Supreme Court expansion as a crucial step in safeguarding the legal right to abortion

And we’re seeing this momentum all across the country: State-based abortion advocates from 11 different states have come together to endorse Supreme Court expansion as a crucial step in safeguarding the legal right to abortion. Watch their full announcement to press HERE.

On the Docket: The Future of Gun Safety, Climate Protections, and Migrant Rights

Following mass tragedies in Buffalo and Uvalde, the national focus has turned towards the urgent need for gun violence prevention. But while the American people are looking for ways to solve this horrible epidemic of gun violence, by the end of this month the 6-3 Supreme Court will issue a decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen — a case that could gut state-level gun control laws across the country.

Get a breakdown of the case and it’s potential effects on the future of gun violence prevention laws in America here:

The Supreme Court is Poised to Upend Gun Violence Prevention Laws

The 6-3 far right majority still has 30 cases to decide before the end of the current term, including potentially landmark decisions on the future of abortion rights, our ability to combat climate change, and more.

Court Chatter

Even with all eyes on the upcoming decisions in these cases, the far-right majority has been busy issuing opinions with drastic consequences for the American people. In Shinn v. Ramirez, the conservatives on the Court — led by Justice Thomas — ruled that evidence of innocence is not enough to have a guilty verdict overturned for someone convicted of a crime, even if they were sentenced to death.

The Supreme Court just condemned a man to die despite strong evidence he’s innocent

“Thus, in Thomas’s view, the purpose of a state-conducted trial is to give criminal defendants a procedure in state court. But once that process is concluded, the state court’s decision generally should remain final — even if that means executing an innocent person or condemning someone in violation of the Constitution.”

The Supreme Court Just Gutted Another Constitutional Right

"4 federal judges on 2 different courts concluded there was a reasonable probability that Barry Jones didn't commit the crime for which he was sentenced to death...Today, the Supreme Court essentially told the state that it can go ahead & execute him anyway."

Legal experts: Clarence Thomas’ “radical” ruling forces innocent people to stay in prison

“Legal experts responded with alarm Monday to a ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court's right-wing majority that could lead to the indefinite imprisonment and even execution of people who argue their lawyers didn't provide adequate representation after convictions in state court.”
