This week, politicians and heads of state are gathered in Los Angeles for the 2022 Summit of the Americas, and Amazon Watch is there accompanying an Indigenous delegation to demand an end to Amazon crude!
California is the largest destination for crude oil exports from the Amazon rainforest, so this is the perfect opportunity to make our voices heard!
On average, California receives 50% of the crude oil extracted from the Amazon each year. The state plays an outsized role in the consumption of oil from the Amazon rainforest, which means that its government holds a crucial role in ending the extraction.
As heads of state meet to discuss policy issues at the Summit of the Americas, we’ll make sure they hear our demands to end oil extraction in the Amazon. When we speak to press and elected officials this week, we'll make sure that they know how many people have added their names to this pledge!
The Amazon and climate cannot wait any longer! Leaders must take action in defense of our planet.
