John,
The Biden administration finally weighed in on a conservation battle in Alaska that’s been raging for decades.
Bristol Bay is home to the most valuable salmon fisheries – producing half of the world’s sockeye salmon. It is also a coveted location by mining companies for its massive quantity of copper and gold deposits.
These mineral resources prompted a mining proposal known as Pebble Mine, which has been hugely controversial because scientists have determined that the project would irreparably harm the Bristol Bay ecosystem. If Pebble Mine were allowed to proceed, it would poison critical sockeye salmon breeding grounds, including 130 miles of streams, 2,800 acres of wetlands, and 130 acres of open water.
But thanks to the Environmental Protection Agency’s actions, the Pebble Mine could be stopped dead in its tracks. Invoking the Clean Water Act, the EPA has proposed a legal determination that would ban the disposal of mining waste into the Bristol Bay watershed. This proposal would prohibit any entity from disposing mine-related waste within 308 square miles around a mining site.
This is a MAJOR step by the Biden administration to uphold a campaign promise to “listen to the scientists and protect Bristol Bay.” Here at SEEC PAC, we could not be more thrilled by this administration’s actions to protect an ecologically and economically important ecosystem. While some mining is important for the clean energy transition, it must be done at locations that won’t irreparably harm critical ecosystems and in environmentally sustainable ways.
As Congress’ strongest voices for defending our natural resources, SEEC members will continue working with the Biden administration to protect our lands for generations to come. Will you pitch in so that our SEEC members can keep fighting to protect our natural treasures like Bristol Bay? [[link removed]]
