Friends —

As the former Commanding General of the Infantry Center at Fort Benning and Chief of Infantry, I know a bit about weapons.

Let me state unequivocally, for all intents and purposes, the AR-15 and rifles like it are weapons of war.

Those opposed to an assault weapons ban, especially the NRA, like to play semantic games about the AR-15, pretending there is some meaningful difference between it and the M4 carbine the military carries.

There really isn’t.

The AR-15 is essentially the civilian version of that weapon.

The big differences are barrel length and the ability to shoot three round bursts. The M4 can shoot in bursts, the AR-15 can only shoot a single shot.

But now the AR-15 can be tailored to variable barrel lengths and fitted with either Weaver or Picatinny rails for adding different sights and shooting aids.

And our troops usually use single shot, not burst fire. You’re able to fire much more accurately that way.

That is why the AR-15 is accurately called a weapon of war. It is a very deadly weapon with the same basic functionality that our troops use to kill the enemy.

The NRA knows it's true, but they play games with semantics and they often get away with it.

But at VoteVets, we are uniquely positioned to push back against the NRA and their talking points. But we need your help to get it done. So please:

Can you make a $3 contribution to VoteVets today to help us fight back against the NRA and their talking points in the campaign to change our gun laws?
