John,
It may be the extreme anti-LGBTQ+ laws passed in states like Florida that make national headlines, but here in Kansas, too many lawmakers are also trying to erase the rights of LGBTQ+ people.
As governor, I've used my position to stand against these discriminatory proposals and expand the rights of LGBTQ+ Kansans, because I believe that every person deserves to live as their authentic selves and love whom they love.
It's important that all of us stand up for the fundamental rights of our neighbors, but it's also crucial for Kansans to see that people just like them, who live in their neighborhood, share an office, or go to their church, are affected by laws that expand or restrict the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.
That's why celebrating Pride Month is so important. It's both an act of resistance and a chance to show that LGBTQ+ people are a part of the fabric that makes Kansas great.
Whether you celebrate as an ally or a member of the community, or whether you march in a parade or simply wear a button, celebration is crucial, even in difficult times. I hope that I will see you do your part in the weeks ahead.
I firmly believe that every person who calls Kansas home should have equal opportunity to succeed and to simply exist free from discrimination. But we still have so much work left to do, and I'm committed to continuing this fight for another term if you will allow me that honor.
I want to make this clear to every member of the LGBTQ+ community: I will never stop fighting for you. Let's get to work to ensure every Kansan feels loved, safe, and seen.
Thank you,
Laura
