John, major update: after tens of thousands of Common Cause members like you spoke out, ABC and CBS have announced that they’ll air the January 6th House Select Committee’s high-profile, prime-time hearing this Thursday. [1] [2]
This is a HUGE win for transparency and accountability – but we still have a ways to go.
You see, this is only the first in a series of historic hearings to be held by the Committee over the coming months. We need to make sure ABC, CBS, and other broadcast networks remain committed to giving each of these hearings the airtime they deserve.
Sign the Petition: Thank ABC and CBS for stepping up – and urge these and other broadcast networks to televise ALL of the Committee’s hearings live and in prime time >>
John, we deserve the full truth about January 6th – including what then-President Trump knew about this shameful attempt to upend our democracy and when he knew it. That’s the only way we’ll get the accountability we deserve.
Just consider this historical example: when impeachment proceedings against President Nixon began, the public wasn't convinced. But after a public airing of irrefutable evidence of his wrongdoing, overwhelming bipartisan majorities supported Nixon's removal.
A major factor was PBS's decision to broadcast the Watergate hearings in full. Millions of viewers tuned in as the story of the break-in and cover-up unfolded before their eyes, hearing testimony from presidential advisors, the attorney general, former spies, and more.
A strong democracy needs an informed public. And especially today – when our political climate is marked by disinformation and distractions that would be unheard of in the 1970s – the only way to cut through the noise is with the absolute, unvarnished truth.
Add Your Name: Networks must put our democracy first – and commit to televising every one of the January 6th House Select Committee’s public hearings live and in prime time.
John, television channels covered the deadly January 6th attack for hours that day – scrapping most of their planned programming. These networks knew that the public needed and had a right to witness the day’s horrific events with their own eyes.
Now, it’s time for them to once again use their massive reach to keep us informed. I hope you’ll speak out today.
