Dear team,
In 2002, Francisca gave birth to a baby boy in a Chilean
hospital-and was then sterilized without her consent by the
doctor who performed her Cesarean section, simply because she was HIV
positive. In that moment, Francisca was robbed of the right to
determine her reproductive future.
Finally, on May 26 President Gabriel Boric of Chile delivered a public
apology to Francisca as part of a

settlement in a case brought by the Center for Reproductive Rights and
Vivo Positivo, a Chilean-based HIV/AIDS service organization.

The president acknowledged the harm caused to Francisca and committed
to guaranteeing the reproductive autonomy of all people in Chile.
This apology comes after a decade-long effort by the Center and Vivo
Positivo at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR),
which led to justice when Chile agreed to end forced sterilization
last year. As part of the Friendly Settlement Agreement signed by the
government of Chile, Francisca and her son will receive full
reparations. Chile also agreed to reform its policies to address
discrimination against people living with HIV so that history doesn't
repeat itself.
You can learn more about this case and what the Center has been able
to accomplish with your support on our website. Thank you for being
with us in the fight to protect the reproductive autonomy of all
people.
