The Power of Diverse Voices workshop — now one of Poynter’s most competitive programs — is a transformative, four-day seminar that helps journalists of color find their voice and build skills for writing opinion pieces and personal essays.
Led by Tom Huang, this seminar will foster the diversity of voices necessary in the profession and train the next generation of opinion writers from a wide spectrum of backgrounds.
With the support of expert instructors and fellow journalists of color, you’ll develop the confidence and skills to share your unique perspective in persuasive writing. You will learn both through instruction as well as intensive coaching in small writing groups. You will focus on fact-based opinion writing — and using social media to spark a conversation — across platforms.

If you want to take a step back from the daily grind, focus on improving your craft and connect with other passionate journalists, Poynter’s Summit for Reporters and Editors is for you.
With a focus on the craft of journalism, each online session will weave together tips, tools and case studies that benefit both the reporter and the editor. All-star faculty including Tom Huang, Maria Carrillo, Kathleen McGrory, Kathy Lu, Kelly McBride and Samantha Ragland will also offer one-on-one coaching sessions to help you navigate your current challenges and grow in your career.

| How Many, Which Ones? The Refugee Crisis and U.S. Immigration Reform (July 2022) |
Online group seminar, July 13 at 2 p.m. Eastern
Core to the debate over immigration reform in the U.S. is how to handle refugees, from Ukraine, from Afghanistan, and from countries in Central America. This free webinar will give journalists a more nuanced understanding of immigration in the U.S. in order to analyze current policy, report on reform efforts in a deeply divided Congress and understand the impact of legislation on local communities in the U.S. — not to mention those fleeing violence and persecution abroad.
