VICTORY : Indiana Supreme Court Allows Brady’s Gun Industry Case to Move Forward!

After two decades, the Indiana Supreme Court ruled that we can move forward with our lawsuit against irresponsible gun manufacturers and dealers in Gary, Indiana. Brady Legal began representing this case in 1999, when we alleged that 10 gun manufacturers — including Smith & Wesson, Ruger, Colt’s, Beretta, Glock, and Hi-Point — recklessly helped supply firearms to the criminal gun market, which helped fuel gun violence throughout the city of Gary. This lawsuit is the only ongoing case against virtually the entire gun industry. So that means this is a victory not only for the city of Gary, but also for all gun violence survivors everywhere. Reminder: Vigils to Honor Sandy Hook and Victims of Gun Violence

It was seven years ago on December 14, 2014, that a gunman murdered 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. In partnership with the Newtown Foundation, we’re encouraging community members to hold local vigils or remembrance events throughout the month of December, using the marker as part of a nationwide effort to call to #EndGunViolence. This week, the California Department of Education issued a memo to parents and guardians to remind them of their responsibility to store firearms safely, including the consequences mandated by state law. The memo — which comes a few weeks after the shooting at Saugus High School — was a result of a meeting between Brady California members and State Superintendent Tony Thurmond. For years, Brady members in California and elsewhere have urged schools to educate and inform parents about the lifesaving importance of safe gun storage. In 75% of school shootings, the gun came from the home. Safer homes, safer schools.

Thank you to Amanda Wilcox (Brady California), Becca Gonzales (Brady Sacramento), and Niki Smith and Julie Schardt (Brady Stockton/Cleveland School Remembers) for meeting with Superintendent Thurmond and working to keep our children and communities safe! [link removed] [[link removed]]

Brady Quote of the Week 🎤

"What the Framers meant by 'keep and bear arms' in 1791 may be debatable, but today's reality is not. More than 1 million people have been shot in America over the past decade, of whom more than 300,000 were killed."

— Brady’s amicus brief submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court, as quoted by Education Week [[link removed]]
