** LEAF's Gains in Equality
------------------------------------------------------------
In this month's newsletter, we share a victory for reproductive rights in Alberta, and continue the fight for substantive equality, including:
--> In the case of R v Sharma, we intervened to address the over-incarceration of Indigenous women
--> In the #16Days Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, we join the conversation by using the hashtag #OurActionsMatter to share how we are helping to end and prevent gender-based violence. We share some tweets below!
Plus, we share updates on our substantive equality efforts in our Bulletin and introduce you to our new staff members!

** LEAF is intervening at the SCC in Pension Equality Case on December 16, 2019
------------------------------------------------------------
We have been granted leave to intervene before the Supreme Court of Canada in the case
Fraser v Canada (Attorney General). LEAF will argue pensions should take into account the gendered reality of care giving obligations, so that all women employees can receive a fair pension. The date of the intervention is set for December 16, 2019.

** LEAF intervened at the Ontario Court of Appeal in R v Sharma
------------------------------------------------------------
On November 20, 2019, we intervened in court with the Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights ([link removed]) to highlight how systems of discrimination shape the experiences of criminalized Indigenous women and to advocate for conditional sentences.
We thank pro bono counsel Jessica Orkin and Adriel Weaver of Goldblatt Partners ([link removed]) , as well as our volunteer case committee members: Gillian Balfour, Emma Cunliffe, Mary Eberts, Emily Hill, Naiomi Metallic, Renée Pelletier, Rakhi Ruparelia, Martha Shaffer, and Kim Stanton.

** LEAF requested Alberta Legislature Committee not proceed with Bill 207
------------------------------------------------------------
With the support of members of LEAF Edmonton, LEAF National submitted a letter to the Standing Committee on Private Bills and Private Members’ Public Bills opposing 'Conscience Rights' Bill 207. We argued that Bill 207 is an infringement of the
Charter rights of women and girls seeking health services. With the incredible work of activists in Alberta we succeeded in stopping Bill 207. The fight to protect reproductive rights continues!
