Monday Nature Mystery

We are pleased to announce the winner of our last Monday Nature Mystery, Hope WoodwardPlease email us your snail mail address and preference for a hat or tote bag to: [email protected]

Congratulations to Hope for correctly identifying the Common Buckeye butterfly, Junonia coenia. According to Insect Identification, the Common Buckeye is a member of the diverse Brush-footed Butterfly family, related to the Monarch, Viceroy, Malachite, and the Fritillary subfamily. Their front legs are so short it can be difficult to see them, but they are covered in short bristles, or hairs, like a hair brush. These bristles are actually sensory organs, used for detecting smells and tasting!
