Dear John,
Sign the petition calling on the IRS to investigate the NRA’s misuse of nonprofit funds—and remove its tax-exempt status if misuse is found.
In the last few weeks, the tragic news of repeated mass shootings across the country has gripped the nation. Just yesterday, 4 people were killed in a Tulsa, OK, mass shooting. From the loss of Black lives in Buffalo, NY, to the murder of 19 students and two teachers last week in Uvalde, TX, the deaths by guns keep increasing, and we’re in a constant state of grief over the senseless gun violence in the U.S.1
Gun violence prevention bills, such as H.R.8 and H.R.1446, have passed in the House but stalled in the Senate.2 This is, in large part, due to the National Rifle Association (NRA) investing millions of dollars to influence lawmakers.3 The NRA's nonprofit status shields it from having to pay taxes and allows it to increase profits for the gun industry, at the expense of all of our lives.4
But there have been countless claims, for years now, around how the NRA handles its nonprofit assets.5 In 2020, the NRA admitted in a tax filing that some of the nonprofit’s money had been used for personal benefit.6 New York Attorney General Letitia James filed to dissolve the NRA due to misappropriation of nonprofit funds, and while the case’s judge rejected the effort to put the NRA out of business, there’s still substantial evidence that an investigation into how it spends its funds is needed.7
Tell the IRS: Start an investigation into the NRA’s spending and remove its nonprofit tax-exempt status if its funds have been misused.

It’s time we take action to fight gun violence and its rising death toll, because thoughts and prayers alone will not protect us. The IRS needs to take action to protect the most vulnerable in our society by investigating the NRA's mishandling of funds—and remove its tax-exempt status if it uncovers misuse.
We, the people, are powerful when we come together. And we must come together to take action and hold people in power and organizations accountable for our safety. We cannot allow our society to be held hostage by special-interest groups (like the NRA) and gun manufacturers that continuously abuse their power.

Thanks for all you do,
