** Community Events Calendar

** DECEMBER 2019
------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Neighbor,

We are lucky to have so many wonderful holiday gatherings and events within our district, so please check the many listings below for details.

While we celebrate the holidays, I urge you to be aware and safe with holiday lights and candles this season. This is a time of year when we see a spike in home fires due to indoor trees, lights and candles. Please double check your smoke alarm batteries, keep heated lights and candles away from curtains and other dry materials and make sure everyone in the home knows what to do in case of fire emergencies. Please take a moment to read this NYC Fire Dept guide for fire prevention ([link removed])

Our Toy Drive continues. Please bring in a NEW, Unwrapped toy for a child between the ages of 2-14 and we will get it to a local family in need. You may drop toys off at my district office, 563 Columbus Office between 87-88th st, from 10am-6pm Monday-Friday. We are accepting toys until December 13th.

Many of you have asked about Volunteer Opportunities in the neighborhood and so, each month, I will highlight a local volunteer opportunity. If you know of an organization in need of volunteers, please send the information to [email protected] and we will consider including it in the next events calendar.
This month we highlight DOROT - a non-profit organization that provides wonderful services for seniors on the UWS and relies on volunteers year round.
DOROT ([link removed]) serves older adults on the west side of Manhattan and is based locally on West 85th street. They strive to address social isolation and serve seniors that are homebound or attend programming at their site.
Volunteer opportunities include Holiday Package Deliveries, Friendly Visiting, reading assistance for the visually impaired, Shop & Escort, teaching seniors over the phone through University Without Walls, and serving meals at DOROT’s Homelessness Prevention Program.
You can learn more at Volunteer Opportunities ([link removed]) .

Please join me for two important events:
Thursday Dec 5th for a Town Hall sponsored by UWS Save Our Stores entitled, Vacant Storefronts and Visions for Neighborhood Revitalization. It will be located at Ethical Culture, 2 West 64th St. .RSVP requested: [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) .

Saturday Dec 7th for the annual West Side Tenants' Conference, held at Fordham University on West 61st from 9:30-4pm. Please check the website ([link removed]) for information on location, panels and speakers.

Beginning on December 2nd, 2019, New Yorkers whose IDNYC is expiring in less than 60 days, will be able to renew their IDNYC through a new online portal ([link removed]) at nyc.gov/IDNYC ([link removed]) .

Did you know that our local community center is also an affordable cultural treasure? The Bernie Wohl Center, located at 647 Columbus Ave between 91-92nd st., offers theatre, dance, readings, performances and classes for youth and adults. Visit the Bernie Wohl website ([link removed]) and learn all that is available through their extensive programming.

As always, if you are interested in Environmental news and events, I encourage you to check out and sign up for newsletters from a long-time local organization called UWS Recycling. Access their website ([link removed]) , sign up for their UWS Eco letter, ([link removed]) which comes our 6 times/year, and learn about all the local and citywide environmental happenings.

If you enjoy strolling through holiday markets, there are several now open in our area; Columbus Circle ([link removed]) , Grand Bazaar NYC ([link removed]) , and Turnstyle ([link removed]) .

I wish you a safe and happy holiday season!

HCC offers a free legal clinic on Monday evenings from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Any New York City resident who does not qualify for HCC's legal services can visit HCC’s Legal Clinic, regardless of income or address. Our volunteer lawyers provide brief legal information, explain basic legal rights and may refer visitors to other legal resources/organizations/agencies. The Clinic is for 15-minute consultations only. You do not retain the volunteer attorney and the attorney cannot represent you or provide legal advice. While most visitors come for legal information about housing-related matters, attorneys may (at their own discretion) field questions about other basic, legal matters, as well. Visitors are asked to bring all documents relevant to their questions.

NYC Housing Connect
Looking for affordable housing? The NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) has developed an online portal to search and apply for affordable housing opportunities in New York City called NYC Housing Connect. On the site, you can: learn how to apply for affordable housing in New York City; view current and upcoming housing opportunities; start, save, and complete an application for your household; and apply to housing options for which you may qualify. NYC Housing Connect seeks to simplify the application process for you. To visit the site, CLICK HERE ([link removed]) . Applying and qualifying for affordable housing can be a long process, and you are not guaranteed to receive housing. Your household must not only qualify with detailed criteria on a property-by-property basis, but you must also be selected at random in that property's lottery. Preferences noted in the advertisement will be given first consideration. For
other housing resources for New York City, visit the Affordable Housing Resource Center ([link removed]) .

NYC Housing Development Corporation
HDC finances rental properties reserved for households that meet certain income restrictions, commonly referred to as either low-income or middle-income. Each posting specifies how many of each type of apartment is available. To apply, please follow the instructions on the application information or advertisement posted for each development. All apartments are awarded through a lottery; your eligibility is determined by income. There is no application fee, facilitator, outside expediter, or broker involved in this process. Filling out the application for the specific project that is advertising available units is the ONLY way to apply for one of the apartments. See available listings ([link removed]) .
