Hello everyone-
I wanted to take a moment and commemorate the 78th anniversary of D-Day. Today on this date in 1944 more than 156,000 brave Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy to liberate an entire continent and confront evil. We must never forget that D-Day was the turning point of the war in Europe and we must never forget the sacrifices of those who paid the ultimate price to save freedom and civilization. I hope all Coloradans will take some time today to honor the bravery that our forces and allies exhibited in northern France on those days in early June of 1944.
I think that General Eisenhower said it best when speaking to soldiers on the eve of the landings:
"You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on the other fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world."
If you have a few minutes, I'd recommend that you take the time to watch General Eisenhower's fascinating interview from 1964 on the then 20th anniversary of D-Day.
