John,

On this day two years ago, when we were just starting to face the uncertainties of the pandemic, we grappled with the deep roots of systemic racism that permeated all levels of our society – especially in our criminal justice system.

No matter how much time passes, we cannot forget about George Floyd. It is up to us to make the changes to finally protect Black lives. We do this by enacting police reforms to finally bring needed accountability and stop egregious acts of force.

That's why I was a supporter of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which aims to hold police accountable through measures like barring chokeholds and improving transparency into police misconduct and use-of-force. This was an important step towards improving our policing system by increasing accountability and stopping excessive force. I hope the Senate will take up this important legislation soon.

Recently, President Biden signed a historic executive order to implement effective, accountable policing and criminal justice practices that will build public trust and strengthen public safety. These actions towards trust, transparency, equality, and accountability are fundamental next steps towards necessary reform.

But there are a lot of systems in our country that need to improve. Whether it is health care, economic opportunity, education, or voting rights, we can and should do more to stop systemic racism and injustice. We need to work together to honor George Floyd's life and bring change.

Let's keep fighting together.
