We were blessed with uncharacteristically good weather for a bank holiday for the Thursday and Friday, helping thousands of people to enjoy many events to celebrate the Queen?s Platinum Jubilee, although the inevitable rain did arrive by the weekend. Come rain or shine Nottingham celebrated by holding events such as street parties ? one of which I attended in Sneinton, to lighting beacons, which I had the pleasure of doing at Green?s Windmill ? there was a real sense of community and enjoyment. I also attended a lunch club in The Meadows and an event at a Mosque in Bakersfield where people were enjoying the festivities.?
The floral installation in the Old Market Square, along with the exhibition of photos of the Queen?s visits to Nottingham over the years, proved very popular. Our council nurseries grew 5,100 plants for the exhibition, which will be brought back to Woodthorpe Park Plant Shop to be sold to customers with some to be donated to local care homes for the elderly from this Friday.
It has been a busy few days at Woodthorpe, who hosted their centenary celebrations on Wednesday and staged a Jubilee beacon lighting, attracting around 3,500 on Thursday. I was very pleased to hear that everyone was respectful and used the bins or took their rubbish home with them from the park.
There were further beacon lightings at Bulwell and Clifton and events were also well attended at Newstead Abbey, Wollaton Hall and Nottingham Castle ? we are so lucky to have such magnificent settings for celebrations like this.
I?d like to thank all council staff and community volunteers who have worked so hard to bring people together across the city to celebrate the remarkable milestone that the Platinum Jubilee marks.

It?s been a slightly soggy start but the grass court tennis season has got underway in the city this weekend.
There are plenty of British players gracing Nottingham Tennis Centre this week for the Rothesay Open with two great wildcards that have entered the draw - reigning US Open Champion and GB Number One -?Emma Raducanu, and former champion?Dan Evans also returns alongside fellow Brits,?Liam Broady?and?Jay Clarke.?Other big names to look for are former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, and?2019 Nottingham Open champion,?Carolina Garcia.
As ever, there is a wonderful schools festival run alongside the tournament to encourage the stars of tomorrow and for new players to take up coaching. We are sure the LTA will build the junior programme up to be even stronger as it takes over the running of the centre and developing the site and we wish them well as the centre and the city once again comes under the sporting spotlight.
Tickets are still available, but there is live action on the BBC red button Tennis: Nottingham Open
