Pride month continues, with great opportunities to help LGBTQ+ youth connect with mental health resources, to be an active ally during Immigrant Heritage Month, and to take action to ensure #EqualityForAll. All that, plus this week's don't-miss episode of Something to Talk About Live! where we'll chat with queer filmmakers, including Alice Wu ("The Half of It").

Support

Support for LGBTQ+ youth via imi.guide!

imi (sounds like eye-me) is a free, digital, research-backed mental health tool made with and for LGBTQ+ teens. imi supports and helps LGBTQ+ teens explore and affirm their identity and learn practical ways to cope with stress, providing space for LGBTQ+ teens, especially QTBIPOC, and those with multiple marginalized identities to feel seen and supported.

imi was created through a collaboration of LGBTQ+ organizations, and hundreds of LGBTQ+ young people from across the country--it’s a tool for LGBTQ+ teens, by LGBTQ+ teens and their allies.

Tools like imi are needed now, more than ever, to address elements contributing to the growing mental health crisis affecting LGBTQ+ youth by providing them with free, accessible, and research-backed support, built in a safe digital space.

Three Steps to Being A Better Ally for Immigrant Heritage Month

It’s vital that marginalized communities stand together and fight injustice. June is Immigrant Heritage Month, and here are some resources to stand in solidarity:

  1. Learn: Learn more about Immigrant Heritage Month and other campaigns to support immigrants and their heritages from the I Stand With Immigrants Initiative. Read the White House’s official proclamation of Immigrant Heritage Month.
  2. Watch: Watch this episode of Something To Talk About Live! that discusses discrimination specific to Hispanic people, some of whom are immigrants, still face in the United States. Check out this video from immigration lawyer Okan Sengun about the complicated process for LGBTQ+ immigrants and refugees to request asylum in the United States. Explore the I Am An Immigrant Youtube channel for more videos.
  3. Share: Follow I Am An Immigrant on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to stay up-to-date with the I Stand With Immigrants Initiative.
  4. Bonus Food-Themed Step: If you live near Orlando, Seattle, or Minneapolis, check out the I Stand With Immigrants sponsored The Food That Made Us food truck tour during the month of June.

Advocacy

Let's Fight for #EqualityForAll!

We're making weekly calls into Senate offices to tell them we need federal anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people before Summer Recess. We need to make sure Senators hear from us--people who care about LGBTQ+ equality– saying we urge them to take action NOW. Even if your Senators are allies, call them, email them, and tweet them your thanks; they need to know that the majority of people in this country support protections from discrimination.

Join the fight for #EqualityForAll NOW!

Something to Talk About...Live!

A Conversation with Queer Filmmakers

Research consistently shows that when people see themselves represented in TV, film, and other media that it has positive impacts on their lives. And when queer filmmakers are involved in telling their own stories we get a more complete picture of LGBTQ+ lives represented on screen.

Join us this Thursday, June 9th at 4:30 PM ET / 1:30 PM PT for Something To Talk About Live, where we will be discussing Liana DeMasi’s article in Vice, “6 LGBTQ+ Cinematographers on Breaking Out and Building a Queer Film Utopia” with filmmakers Qiydaar FosterNick Oceano, and Alice Wu.

You can watch live on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
