John — I just wanted to make sure you saw this email. Our democracy is in real danger, and the stakes could not be higher. — Robert Reich
Dear John,
You may have heard about the pro-Trump Big Lie conspiracy theorists running for secretary of state and other key election oversight positions around the country.
If they win, they'll have the power to shut down polling places, count votes, and certify the winner of the 2024 presidential election.
What you may not have heard about is the massive amount of money being spent to back these Big Lie candidates by right-wing billionaires like Peter Thiel, who alone has poured tens of millions of dollars into helping these pro-Trump candidates take over our elections.
In order to defeat these Trump stooges, we must overcome one big problem: most voters have no idea who their secretary of state is, or why the position is even important. Millions don't even bother to vote in these elections, especially young voters.
So here's our plan: We're using our massive social media following on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to sound the alarm and alert young people, especially those who are less likely to watch cable news but live every minute online. And to expand our reach even further, we've just launched on Snapchat — and so far the response has been extremely encouraging.
Will you make a donation to Inequality Media Civic Action to alert the public and help defeat the pro-Trump candidates trying to take over our elections?
I can honestly say that I've never been more afraid for the future of American democracy than I am right now.
Secretaries of state are some of the most important — and largely overlooked — officials in our democracy. In most states, they oversee our elections, count votes, and declare who won. If even one or two of these candidates win in a key battleground state like Pennsylvania or Arizona, they could complete the coup that Trump tried to pull off in 2020 and reinstall Trump in the White House.
That's why anti-democracy billionaires like Peter Thiel — who once wrote, "I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible" — are willing to spend so much money, and why they are so dangerous.
These billionaires are pushing a radically anti-democratic agenda for America in order to make sure they never have to pay their fair share of taxes, raise wages, or do anything else that might threaten their virtually unlimited wealth.
In the past, most of these kinds of fringe candidates wouldn't have been able to gain enough support to raise money for a real campaign. But now, thanks to Citizens United, today's anti-democracy billionaire class can spend unlimited amounts of money to elect their favored candidates. And they're not holding back.
Between now and November, we must do everything we can to alert voters about what's at stake — especially young people, who are less likely to vote in midterm elections. Our creative team is producing eye-catching viral videos to spread the word to the millions of people following us across social media, and we've just launched on Snapchat to reach even more young people.
To stop these Big Lie candidates from taking over our elections, we need to raise more money than we ever have for any midterm election. Will you make a donation to Inequality Media Civic Action and help save our democracy?
Thank you for helping us make this campaign possible,
Robert Reich
