Warm greetings,
On this World AIDS Day, I’m honored to reach out and introduce myself as The Center’s new Director of HIV Services. It’s a privilege to be in this role, and I want to take this opportunity to update you on where we are in the fight to end the epidemic and how we continue to work to support those in our community who need The Center most.
Another year has come and gone. With a whirlwind of activity affecting LGBTQ+ communities in 2019, we take this day to pause and reflect upon how HIV impacts us and those around us, to show support to those living with HIV and to remember those who have passed.
Although the impact of HIV/AIDS has and will always leave a permanent imprint on our lives, today New Yorkers can look optimistically to the progress made in the Ending the AIDS Epidemic (ETE) initiative. Governor Cuomo has stated that we are still on track to end the AIDS epidemic by 2020, with new HIV diagnosis at an all-time low in 2018 and PrEP use on the rise for New Yorkers. All of this is thanks to the collaborative efforts of local organizations dedicated in the fight against HIV/AIDS and by New Yorkers themselves taking control of their own healthcare outcomes by engaging in safer sex practices, receiving regular HIV testing and utilizing PrEP and PEP services.
Moving into the new year, New Yorkers look to leaders in the community to continue the progress made in the ETE initiative. The Center is on the front lines of the fight to end the epidemic, providing free HIV testing, linkage to care for individuals diagnosed with HIV, access and navigation to PrEP and PEP services and regular support groups for those impacted by HIV. We stand with you, committed to fighting this fight until the end of HIV/AIDS is a reality.
The Center also invites you to join us this afternoon to commemorate World AIDS Day. In partnership with Visual AIDS, we will show a series of short videos, Still Beginning: The 30th Annual Day With(out) Art ([link removed]), on loop from 2-5 pm. Video topics include anti-stigma work, public sex culture, AIDS activism and intergenerational conversations.
Thank you, as always, for your commitment to supporting The Center, our work and the fight to end AIDS.
In solidarity,
Kirsten Eid
