June is Pride Month! π π
This is a month to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and all of the progress they have made by breaking barriers to being treated equally under the law.
But the fight for equality isnβt over. Since 2020 alone, there have been over 100 bills attacking transgender rights in Republican-controlled state legislatures across the country, including right here in Wisconsin.
My opponent, Derrick Van Orden, made headlines when he threatened a 17-year-old library staffer and self-described LGBTQ+ advocate at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Library over the libraryβs gay pride display. He repeatedly demanded to know who set up the display so he could βteach them a lesson.β The young staffer was too afraid to tell him she had set it up. She said he then started shouting at her, aggressively shoving books around.
That is not okay. As a staunch ally of the LGBTQ+ community, his behavior sickens me.
Together, we must all work to make our country a better place for everyone. Pride Month highlights just how much is on the line. Roe v. Wade isnβt the only landmark case that SCOTUS might overturn β that could happen to Obergefell v. Hodges, too.
We must not let that happen.
Thank you for fighting the good fight during this important month,
