You might have read about the catastrophic heatwave in India and Pakistan this spring, with temperatures so high that people couldn’t leave their houses to work, continuous power and water shortages and failed crops. And maybe, like me, you’ve asked yourself how many more wake up calls we need to tell us we simply can’t wait any longer for action on the climate crisis? It’s not a problem for tomorrow, but now.
The climate crisis is a result of our broken economic system where banks, big business and wealthy countries benefit the most, while others face devastation. We desperately need radical change.

While the COP26 climate talks last year were far from successful, the climate justice movement that came out in force in Glasgow and around the world became mainstream.
People like you and me came together to show that you can’t tackle climate change without a radical transformation of the global economy. We need to build on this momentum and mobilise more people to take a stand to fight for a better way.
This year’s COP in Egypt is being talked about as a real opportunity to push for compensation for climate damages in the global south. And we can amplify these voices here in the UK and fight for meaningful change by taking action together.
** Time for change

Fossil fuel companies are blocking action on climate change to protect their profits by using ‘corporate courts’ in trade deals to sue those countries taking positive action for billions. These corporations hold a lot of power. But so do we if we speak out together.
It’s not just fossil fuel corporations that are causing climate change, it’s banks too.
Many countries in the global south continued making debt payments to big banks, like Blackrock, throughout the pandemic. Because of this debt, countries like Zambia, which are on the front line of climate change, don’t have the funds to tackle the impact.
The UK’s industrialisation has meant it’s one of the largest historic emitters of carbon to this day. And this industrialisation was possible because of the colonial extraction of trillions of pounds from southern countries, which has left many without the funds to tackle the impacts of the climate crisis.
It’s time the UK took responsibility for accelerating the climate crisis, in both the past and present. It’s time for change.
** Climate justice needs people behind it

Just two weeks ago, we organised a day of action to stop big polluters using corporate courts to undermine climate action, and it was a great success. Our local activists raised awareness, from Bristol and London, to Macclesfield and Glasgow, exposed corporations and pushed for climate justice.
In Salisbury our activists protested outside the oil corporation Rockhopper’s headquarters and in Enfield our activists marched on energy company Uniper’s power plant. With your backing we can do more actions like this, exposing big business and getting our message heard in the media.

** Help reach more people this summer

We have some exciting events coming up this summer which will keep building momentum for climate justice, but we need your help to make them happen.
In July we will be running a speaker tour with Lumumba Di-Aping, former UN climate negotiator for global south countries. A donation from you can help get him to the UK and promote the event to wider audiences, engaging more people in climate justice.
We are co-organising a summer university in Germany for activists from across Europe, where we can bring together our work on the climate crisis and reversing the damages of our broken economic system.
Summer is an important time for getting our message out, with many of our local groups running stalls in high streets and at local festivals. Our youth network will also be running workshops on climate justice across the country. Your donation could help produce and print the key materials we need for engaging the public.
