Dear neighbor:
Like yours, my heart aches for the victims and families of the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas. This unspeakable tragedy occurred just days after a gunman shot and killed 10 people at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, and a gunman opened fire at a church in Laguna Woods, California, killing one person and injuring five others. And just this week, we lost four more innocent people to a shooting at a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. These senseless tragedies add to a list of over 200 mass shootings in the United States so far this year.
Thoughts and prayers are not enough to break the pattern of gun violence that is plaguing our nation. We need action. Mass shootings are preventable, and we can keep them from happening through common-sense policy solutions. That’s why this week, House Judiciary Committee Democrats passed eight pieces of gun safety legislation packaged together as the Protect Our Kids Act, which will now move to the House floor for a full vote next week along with other gun violence prevention measures. Once this legislation passes the House, we need the Senate to take up and pass these crucial initiatives.
Parents, families, educators, and community members across the country are pleading for elected officials at every level to act to make their communities safe. I want you to know that I hear you – and I will not give up until Congress passes meaningful gun violence prevention legislation.
