It's long past time we took meaningful action to combat the gun violence epidemic facing our country.
There have already been 230 mass shootings this year alone, and nearly 8,000 lives have been taken by acts of gun violence.
Thoughts and prayers will never be enough to combat gun violence. Today on National Gun Violence Awareness Day, we wear orange to honor those we've lost to gun violence and recommit to the fight for common-sense gun safety reforms.
As a mom, a pediatrician, and a member of Congress, I know we need common-sense legislation that keeps our communities safe, including universal background checks for gun ownership, federal red flag laws to keep guns out of the hands of people perceived to be a danger to others, and policies to ensure that children cannot get access to firearms.
I was proud to help pass the Bipartisan Background Checks Act in the House to close loopholes that allow firearms to be purchased without background checks. This would have been a crucial step in our fight against gun violence, but Republicans in the Senate have blocked our progress.
This shouldn't be a partisan issue – it's common sense, John. Over 90% of Americans – including a majority of Republicans – support background checks on gun sales. It's time we take action to ensure no more lives are lost to gun violence.
