Campaign Updates

The Care That Works Coalition organized partners to plan for an equitable child care future
Our event on May 21 at La Colaborativa’s office in Chelsea brought together nearly 50 attendees for an inspiring day of team building and organizing. We shared and listened and broke bread together and lifted up a powerful set of ideas and strategies to advance our core mission: child care equity.

Fighting for ARPA funds
Last week, The Boston City Council heard our demands to allocate federal American Rescue Plan Act funding for child care worker empowerment. The Care That Works Coalition testified on behalf of working-class parents and child care workers, including family child care providers and assistants; family, friend, and neighbor caregivers; and early education teachers who are fighting for more recognition and voice because we know that paid or unpaid, and counted or uncounted, our labor keeps communities moving forward every day.

We are calling on our elected leaders to direct these resources to child care worker-led pilots so that we can build a new system – founded not on exploitation, but on empowerment.

Take action on transit affordability: Sign our petition
Please join us in demanding low-income transit fares across Massachusetts! Sign our petition to demand that the Massachusetts Legislature make our public transit systems equitable and accessible.

How can you join the fight for safe, affordable, equitable, and accessible public transit systems in Massachusetts? Sign our petition ([link removed]) calling for:

1. Reduced-fare programs for low-income riders on all modes.
2. New progressive revenue measures to ensure public transit is paid for by those who have plenty, not by those who are struggling to get by.

Our public transit systems need FAIR FUNDING, which means passing the Fair Share Amendment ([link removed]) . This question on the November ballot in Massachusetts would create a new permanent, progressive source of revenue to help maintain our public transit systems and provide resources to fund a low-income fare. Solidarity with Macy’s Workers in their fight for a fair contract
This past week, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1445, Greater Boston Labor Council, and community allies joined in solidarity with Macy’s workers in their fight for a fair contract. Macy’s workers need YOUR help: Send a message ([link removed]) that you stand with your neighborhood Macy’s workers as they negotiate a new and fair contract.

Macy’s workers want what we all want: a good job with the wages, benefits, and protections they need to support their families and build a career they can be proud of. But, the company’s leadership, including CEO Jeff Gennet, will not listen to workers and is refusing to give them the wages, benefits, and protections they deserve. It’s time to give back to the sales associates that make Macy’s the successful store that it has become!

Join us in celebrating the Chelsea community with a free benefit concert!
The Greater Boston Labor Council (GBLC) is presenting a family-friendly concert featuring award trumpeter Charlie Sepúlveda this July. Speakers will include worker warriors fighting wage theft. All proceeds will go to La Colaborativa, Community Action Programs Inter-City Inc, and Chelsea Black Community.

GreenRoots 7th Annual Evening on the Chelsea Creek
Join GreenRoots for their 7th Annual Evening on the Chelsea Creek Fundraiser, featuring live music by Clave and Blues, food from local restaurants, and lots of dancing. For decades, GreenRoots has been on the forefront of organizing for environmental justice and waterfront access. They have always ensured that when land and water become cleaner, those most impacted by the years of environmental degradation and toxic pollution will have access to these natural resources: Our waterfront, our land, and our neighborhoods. Now, despite so much success, they are in a similar predicament and have to vacate their waterfront offices.

In Case You Missed It!

Chelsea is not a sacrifice zone!
On Thursday, our partners at GreenRoots, Chelsea community members, and allies demanded action to stop asbestos and air pollution in Chelsea during a community meeting with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. Our environmental justice communities deserve answers and restitution! We must stand up and speak out to protect people and our environment and ensure that our communities are never put at risk from hazardous construction materials again.

Boston Teachers Union urges state education commissioner to dismantle Boston Public School receivership
The Boston Teachers union scored a victory last week when the state education commissioner declined to put the Boston Public Schools under state receivership, although a final decision is pending. Students, teachers, and members of their own community deserve to have a voice in their school system. The people who are closest to the issue are closest to the solution. It's time to listen and invest in resources, not receivership.

“We are glad that the Commissioner did not recommend receivership today, and that we were able to avert a potentially disastrous recommendation that would be seen as a hostile state takeover of our schools,” said Boston Teachers Union President Jessica Tang.

Action to ensure ARPA funds help create affordable housing
This past week, Neighbor to Neighbor, Lynn United for Change, housing and social justice organizations, and allies in Lynn, Massachusetts united together to urge state officials to allocate $29 million in federal ARPA money for affordable housing. In any circumstance, everyone should be able to make a home in Massachusetts. Together, we can win commonsense solutions that ensure we all can afford to stay in our homes while having enough to care for our families.
