For years I was a leader in my kids’ Cub Scout troop. Having the chance to
watch kids and parents alike go from uneasy in the outdoors to expert
campers was something I particularly enjoyed.

I see that same skill building with our campaign’s volunteers. People come
in convinced they could never knock doors or talk to voters on the phone.
Not long after, they’re canvassing on their own, hitting hundreds of
doors, and asking to do more. It’s so fun to see first time volunteers I
met in 2018 leading canvass shifts and helping new volunteers.

As a teacher, nothing makes me happier than seeing people take a challenge
and run with it.

I write about this to say: We’re rebuilding our field program right now.
In 2020, we were mostly virtual. But this year we’re back in full
force—knocking doors and organizing in person. We’re rebuilding our field
program with a particular focus on young voters, including students at the
many community colleges and universities in the district.

In 2018, we found that some of our retired volunteers were the best at
canvassing in the dorms. Likewise, our student volunteers did great in the
retirement communities! We’re going to need that same enthusiasm as we hit
up voters who (because of redistricting) have never seen my name on the
ballot before and may not know who I am.

That means we’re putting serious resources into building a robust and
effective field program that will make sure people are registered, remind
them to get their ballots in on time, and persuade swing voters to vote
for us.

Your donations help us move those plans to action. From literature that we
leave at doors that explains who I am, to hiring young organizers whose
whole job it is to get out the vote on campus.

This will be my toughest race yet, and I am so appreciative of every
person who has (and will!) chip in to make sure we win in November.
