I am thrilled by the progress we are beginning to see on climate legislation this year. I wanted to share just a few of the highlights: -
SB 1314, which would prevent Big Oil's greenwashed plan to drill for more oil with captured carbon, passed the State Senate. -
AB 2419, the California Justice40 Act which would ensure that our climate investments made with federal funding are equitable and benefit communities who need it most, passed the State Assembly. -
AB 2316, which would make community solar affordable and accessible, passed the Assembly. -
AB 2026, which would phase out single-use plastics from online shopping, passed the Assembly. Friend, it’s because of the support and energy of climate champions like you that so many of our priority bills passed. This team made over 330 phone calls to state legislators over the last two weeks! It wasn’t a perfect sweep. There were two anti-climate bills that we opposed and asked legislators to vote No on that passed. And SB 953, which would end offshore oil drilling, didn't see a floor vote after dying in a Senate committee. Overall, we’re encouraged to see the progress so far on climate legislation this year, especially after years of inaction, and the activism from this team that led to such a successful week. As busy as last week was, June is going to be even busier, since now that all these bills have passed out of their original house, they will be heard in policy committees in the opposite house. June 30 is the deadline for bills to pass out of this next policy committee, and by August 31 every bill must pass their final votes and be sent to the Governor for approval. So this month, we’ll be counting on you to keep up the pressure on the Legislature to send all of these priority climate bills to Governor Newsom’s desk to be signed into law. Check out our State Priority Bills page to get the full breakdown and find out what you can do to help pass these bills! |
