John,
There are truly no words to describe the heartbreaking tragedy in Uvalde, Texas.
I cannot fathom the pain of dropping your child off at elementary school – only to be told hours later that you will never pick them up, never hug them again, because they were gunned down by an active shooter.
Too many families have experienced the grief of losing a loved one to gun violence. That's why I signed commonsense gun safety policies into law in New Mexico, including a law that requires background checks for every person who purchases a weapon.
We lost 21 precious lives last week – and while no amount of thoughts and prayers can bring these children and teachers back to their families, there is one thing we can do: turn our grief into action.
It's time for the U.S. to put an end to our gun violence epidemic. The first federal policy we need to pass is a universal background check on every single person who buys a gun – because we cannot let a weapon into dangerous hands again.
If you're with me, will you please respond to this one simple question before midnight?
Should the U.S. require background checks for all gun owners?

My heart goes out to all families who have been impacted by our country's gun violence epidemic.
Thank you for your advocacy,
Michelle Lujan Grisham
