Is NC Going to Finally Expand Medicaid?

Senate President Phil Berger announced at the beginning of the short session that Republicans would finally pursue expanding Medicaid in NC. But Speaker of the House Tim Moore said he would not be bringing it to the floor.

There has been some progress in the Senate on this- last week the bill for Medicaid Expansion passed out of both the Senate Health Committee and the Senate Finance Committee. A vote happened this week to pass Medicaid expansion with only one vote against it, and now we wait to see if the House makes any changes.

Contact your legislators in the House to put pressure on Speaker Moore to bring this bill to the floor for a vote.

July 26, 2022 Election

The May primary resulted in some run off elections and some municipalities have a general election on July 26. This will not be a high turn out election unless we organize and get people to the polls!

General Municipal Elections: Charlotte, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Hickory, Mooresville and Sanford

Municipal Run Off Elections: Cary, Elizabeth City, Erwin, Henderson, New Bern, Rocky Mount and Statesville

Board of Education Run Off Elections: Caswell County, Edgecombe County, Franklin County, Granville County (Correction: Last week we stated that Orange County would also have a runoff but that information has now been updated. There will be no runoff for Orange County Board of Education)

Sheriff Second Primary (This happens when no candidate exceeds the 30% threshold):

Graham County Sheriff (Republican), Wake County Sheriff (Democratic)

Important Dates to Know:

Mail In Ballot Portal Open Now!
June 26 - Mail-In Ballots will start to be mailed out
July 1 - Voter Registration Deadline to vote on July 26
July 7 - Early Voting/Same Day Registration Starts (Check your county board of elections website for locations and hours)
July 19 - Deadline to request a mail-in ballot
July 23 - Early Voting/Same Day Registration Ends
July 26 - Election Day and all mail-in ballots must be postmarked by July 26

Taking Action During Pride Month

Pride Month is supposed to be a happy time, but the LGBTQ+ community remains under attack for simply existing.

In NC, HB-755 and HB-1067 were introduced in the short session which began 2 weeks ago. These bills are infamously known across the country as "Don't Say Gay" bills, which originated in Florida. State legislatures across the country are copying and pasting harmful bills and passing them into law further putting LGBTQ+ people in danger.

These bills will ban all sexuality and gender curriculum in K - 3rd or 6th Grade, disclose counseling notes of students giving students no right to privacy, out students to parents when they aren't ready putting them in danger if they are not safe to be out at home, all curricula in classrooms could be challenges and teachers and schools could face litigation for LGBT affirming resources, books, curricula if a parent opposes.

To this day, the Department of Public Instruction still does not include anything in the curriculum regarding the LGBTQ+ community and its history.

These bills are harmful to students, teachers and parents. Contact your legislators in the House today to urge them to vote NO!
