Spurred by Trump’s Big Lie about the 2020 election, throngs of his supporters are running for office this year – many of them parroting the same lies about election fraud and, in the process, proposing radical ideas that would undermine our democracy.
One of the most dangerous candidates is Doug Mastriano, a far-right Republican who just won the GOP nomination for governor in Pennsylvania – a state with an immense influence in presidential elections due to its large count in the Electoral College. Mastriano, who received Trump’s endorsement in the primary, has pledged to purge every voter from the state’s voter rolls and force people to re-register. He’s also vowed to challenge the outcome of the 2024 presidential election if he believes the outcome was “compromised” – which would then permit the Republican-controlled legislature to appoint their own electors. These radically undemocratic proposals only further underscore the need to eliminate the outsized influence some states have over others when it comes to presidential elections – and the best way to solve this problem would be to change the role of the Electoral College.
Mastriano’s proposals aren’t new ideas either. For many months now, state legislatures across the country have been working hard to make voting less accessible and less democratic by passing legislation that restricts the right to vote.
Emboldened by the Big Lie and their desire to undermine future elections in their favor, many far-right politicians are running on promises to fix the “broken election system” – when in reality they just want to suppress voting and further rig it in their favor.
We have a long way to go in fighting back against the Far Right’s efforts to undermine our democracy, but we can start today by supporting an end to the inherently undemocratic role of the electoral college.
