Do you think you should trust politicians just because they pinky promise not to impose a home equity tax?

Dear John,

Politicians say they won’t impose home equity taxes, but when you see the documents we dug up, you’ll have to ask yourself whether you believe them.

Now you need to push your member of Parliament to prove the government won’t impose a home equity tax.

During the last election, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told you he wasn’t going to impose a home equity tax. But documents dug up by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation show staff in the prime minister’s office met with a group that received taxpayer funding to write a report recommending a home equity tax. Actually, it wasn’t just one meeting, it was two.

“I will be briefing the PMO on Thursday (Nov. 18, 2021) about our Solutions Lab report, including giving them a briefing about the tax policy recommendation,” said the report’s author.

This is shocking. Thousands of CTF supporters like you emailed your MPs about a home equity tax. Many of those MPs blew off your concerns. Does this sound familiar?

“The Liberals have no plan to ever introduce a home equity tax on primary residences,” said the office of MP Terry Beech to a CTF supporter. “The only study that went into the introduction of the Home Equity tax was by a non-government organization that has no effect on the decisions of the Liberal Party, nor the Canadian Government.”

Here’s what the office of MP Francis Scarpaleggia told another CTF supporter:

“The study in question was not commissioned by the government. While it did apparently receive some funding from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation, CMHC is an independent federal agency that is not part of the executive policy-making branch of government. Moreover, Generation Squeeze is a non-governmental think tank.”

Wait a second. These MPs say this report has no impact on the government’s decisions. But now we have documents showing PMO met with the author. Twice.

Do you think you should trust politicians just because they pinky promise not to impose a home equity tax? You need to push MPs to take concrete action against a home equity tax.

Here’s what you can tell politicians to do: remove the requirement to report the sale of your home with the Canada Revenue Agency. In 2016, the federal government started forcing taxpayers to disclose their home sales even though the money is tax exempt. If CRA bureaucrats aren’t going to tax your home, they don’t need to know how much you sold your house for.

You need to email your MP and tell them to scrap the reporting requirement with the CRA.
