Biden Delivers Speech Urging Lawmakers To Pass Gun Control Laws
CBS: The remarks from the president come as the nation grapples with the aftermath of mass shootings in Buffalo, New York; Uvalde, Texas; and Tulsa, Oklahoma… Mr. Biden called for the ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines to be reinstated — nearly 20 years after it expired — but said if that cannot be done, then the minimum purchasing age for semi-automatic weapons should be raised from 18 to 21 years old. He also called for a strengthening of background checks, for safe-storage and red-flag laws to be enacted, and for the immunity that shields gun manufacturers from liability to be repealed. The president also called for mental health resources to be bolstered, saying there is a “serious youth mental health crisis in this county” ( CBS). Reuters: Gun safety advocates have pushed Biden to take stronger measures on his own to curb gun violence, but the White House wants Congress to pass legislation that would have more lasting impact than any presidential order. A U.S. House of Representatives committee on Thursday was working on a bill aimed at toughening national gun laws, though the measure has little chance of passing the Senate ( Reuters). Charlie Kirk: In fact, the Second Amendment actually brokers peace. It’s a deterrent from potential authoritarianism and tyrannical behavior. Without ever actually having to fire a bullet, without ever actually having to “arm up,” just the thought or the possibility that that is in the calculus or in the equation makes a tyrant less likely to try and implement the vast, let’s say, anti-freedom, anti-liberty agenda that has been attempted in our country ( Daybreak Daily).

Democrat Congressman Takes Aim At Filibuster and Supreme Court Packing To Achieve Gun Control
Townhall: Congressman Mondaire Jones (D-NY) warned law-abiding gun owners that Democrats will do everything in their power to ensure AR-15s and similar types of firearms are confiscated during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Thursday. The hearing was to consider H.R. 7910, the “Protecting Our Kids Act,” which would raise the legal age to purchase “certain semiautomatic centerfire rifles or semiautomatic centerfire shotguns” from 18 to 21 with “exceptions.” The bill will also “modernize the prohibition on untraceable firearms [and] encourage the safe storage of firearms” ( Townhall). Greg Price: Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-NY): “You will not stop us from passing [gun control]. If the filibuster obstructs us, we will abolish it. If the Supreme Court objects, we will expand. We will not rest until we’ve taken weapons of war out of our communities” ( Twitter). Fox News: But House Judiciary Committee ranking member Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said Jones with his Thursday comments showed Democrats fundamentally don’t want to compromise. “Now we know where they want to go. He just said it,” Jordan, said. “End the filibuster. Expand the court. Forget the Constitution. Now, we know” ( Fox News).

Saudi Arabia Prepares to Step Up Oil Production
Financial Times: Saudi Arabia has indicated to western allies that it is prepared to raise oil production should Russia’s output fall substantially under the weight of sanctions, according to five people familiar with the discussions. The kingdom has resisted calls from the White House to accelerate production increases despite oil prices trading near $120 a barrel, the highest level in a decade, arguing that the energy crunch could get significantly worse this year. Saudi Arabia believes it needs to keep spare production capacity in reserve. But fears of outright supply shortages have risen after the EU launched another round of sanctions against Moscow, including a ban on importing seaborne cargoes of Russian oil into the bloc ( Financial Times). Wall Street Journal: Saudi-led OPEC and its allies agreed to a bigger-than-expected oil-production increase, allowing Riyadh to potentially pump more crude. At the same time, Saudi Arabia agreed to extend a two-month-old cease-fire with Iran-backed Houthi fighters in Yemen, where the kingdom has been entangled in a costly and unpopular seven-year-old war. Both moves were sought by the U.S. and helped set the stage for Mr. Biden to visit Saudi Arabia later this month as the president looks to set aside longstanding divisions with the kingdom amid high oil and gasoline prices that have driven inflation. While the visit hasn’t been announced, Thursday’s moves create momentum for the president’s trip ( Wall Street Journal).

Seattle Police Department Lacks Manpower To Investigate Sex Crimes
Fox News: The worsening staffing crisis at the Seattle Police Department has forced the defunded force to no longer take on new adult sexual assault cases this year, according to a newly revealed internal memo. The Seattle Times first reported Tuesday about the four-page memo, which the sergeant in charge of the Sexual Assault/Child Abuse Unit sent internally to interim police Chief Adrian Diaz on April 11. In the memo, titled “Staffing Issues,” Sgt. Pamela St. John said she currently is not able to assign new adult sexual assault cases “because of other statutory requirements.” Just three years ago, the unit had 12 skilled detectives, but at the time the memo was written, there are only four remaining ( Fox News). Seattle Times: The unit’s sergeant put her staffing crisis in stark terms. “The community expects our agency to respond to reports of sexual violence,” Sgt. Pamela St. John wrote, “and at current staffing levels that objective is unattainable.” Law enforcement agencies here and across the country have grappled with labor shortages during the pandemic and since the 2020 protests following the murder of George Floyd. But Seattle’s failure to staff its sexual assault unit stands out from other local police departments and raises questions about the Seattle Police Department’s priorities, advocates say ( Seattle Times).

Ilya Shapiro Reinstated to Georgetown Law Position
A controversial SCOTUS tweet landed him on administrative leave. National Review: Legal scholar Ilya Shapiro will be taken off administrative leave from Georgetown University, after the institution concluded its investigation into a series of tweets by Shapiro that caused backlash on campus. Shapiro wrote several tweets in January on the Biden administration’s selection process for a new Supreme Court justice, with the president pledging to nominate a black woman to the Court. In one of those tweets, Shapiro wrote that “objectively best pick for Biden is Sri Srinivasan” but that “alas doesn’t fit into latest intersectional hierarchy so we’ll get lesser black woman” ( National Review). Ilya Shapiro: What I achieved was a technical victory but one that still shows the value in standing up for free speech in the face of cancellation. That’s so even when that speech is inartful, as I readily admitted was my criticism of President Biden’s decision to limit his Supreme Court pool by race and sex. Although I apologized for my poor phrasing—some advised “never apologize,” but I take pride in clear communication—I stand by my view that Mr. Biden should have considered “all possible nominees,” as 76% of Americans agreed in an ABC News poll, and that the best choice would have been Judge Sri Srinivasan, who is an Indian-American immigrant ( Wall Street Journal).

As Ukrainians Pull Back, Russia Now Controls 20 Percent of the Country
Wall Street Journal: Ukrainians fled front-line towns in eastern Ukraine as Russian forces sought to push beyond the city of Severodonetsk, and Kyiv probed Russian defenses in areas where Moscow’s occupying forces are more thinly stretched. The battle for the eastern Donbas region is inflicting heavy casualties on both sides and has uprooted tens of thousands of civilians seeking to escape the intense fighting. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a speech to Luxembourg’s Parliament on Thursday, said that Russia controls about 20% of Ukrainian territory and that the front line stretches for more than 600 miles. The town of Pokrovsk, 80 miles southwest of Severodonetsk, has become a temporary refuge for hundreds of people who each day are fleeing areas increasingly being shelled by Russian forces looking to expand their offensive in Donbas ( Wall Street Journal). CBS: Britain pledged Thursday to send sophisticated medium-range rocket systems to Ukraine, joining the United States and Germany in equipping the embattled nation with advanced weapons for shooting down aircraft and knocking out artillery. Western arms have been critical to Ukraine’s success in stymieing Russia’s much larger and better-equipped military during a war now in its 99th day. But as Russian forces closed in on a key city in recent days, the Ukrainian government said its fighters needed better rocket launchers to prevail. “This pumping of Ukraine with weapons… will bring more suffering to Ukraine, which is merely a tool in the hands of those countries that supply it with weapons,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters ( CBS).

Wisconsin Parents Win Gender Pronoun Case Against Daughter’s School
Alliance Defending Freedom: Attorneys with the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty and ADF represent the parents in the lawsuit, B.F. v. Kettle Moraine School District, which challenges the district’s policy that allows minor students to change their name and gender pronouns at school without parental consent ( Alliance Defending Freedom). Christian Headlines: The controversy started when the parents’ 12-year-old daughter experienced anxiety and depression and began questioning her gender. She told school staff that she wanted to be identified by a male name and by male pronouns, although her parents objected, believing it would “not be in their daughter’s best interest,” the suit says: “Kettle Moraine responded, however, that pursuant to District policy, the school would not follow their decision, but would instead refer to their daughter using whatever name and pronouns she wanted,” Maxwell wrote. The parents “immediately” withdrew her from school, according to their lawsuit. Shortly thereafter, the girl’s demeanor changed, and she decided she wanted to continue using her birth name and female pronouns, the suit says ( Christian Headlines).

China Prepares to Launch New Aircraft Carrier
Wall Street Journal: China is poised to launch its newest, most advanced aircraft carrier, in a major step that will enable its navy to expand its military operations on the high seas. New satellite imagery reviewed by The Wall Street Journal shows that after several years of work in the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai, China’s third carrier, known as a Type 003, may be afloat in coming weeks or even days, analysts said. The Type 003 is China’s third aircraft carrier, and its largest and most advanced. It uses new electromagnetic catapult technology akin to what the U.S. and French carriers have to launch aircraft, analysts said ( Wall Street Journal). American Military News: The military insider, who is familiar with China’s aircraft carrier projects, said the launch of China’s Type 003 carrier, from its Jiangnan shipyard on Shanghai’s Changxing Island, will coincide with China’s Dragon Boat Festival on Friday, June 3. “The aircraft carrier needs to go into sea trials as soon as possible – it may take several years to achieve initial operational capability,” the military insider said. Other preparations at the Jiangnan shipyard also suggest the Type 003 carrier will move soon ( American Military News).

Ohio Governor to Sign Bill Authorizing Arming Teachers, $100 Million in Security Upgrades to Schools
From the story: Ohio Governor Mike DeWine on Thursday said he intends to sign a bill that would allow state school employees to arm themselves. DeWine addressed the bill during a manufacturing event in northeast Ohio. When asked about House Bill 99, he said the legislation would provide extra protection for students… Under the latest version of the bill, school employees who carry guns would need up to 24 hours of initial training, then up to eight hours of requalification training annually ( WBNS). Daily Wire: In addition to the new bill concerning armed security, DeWine also released a statement regarding a school safety bill, HB 687, that would approve $100 million for school security upgrades across the state. The bill would also add $5 million in new security for higher education campuses in Ohio ( Daily Wire). Hugh Hewitt: I think a supermajority of voters also believe that well-trained, experienced and well-armed officers need to be on the campuses of our 131,000 K-12 public and private schools. Police officers who have called my radio show in the days since Uvalde and Buffalo suggest these should be neither rookies nor aging cops, but men and women working two-year tours after at least five years on the force, perhaps rotating through various campuses to gain familiarity with them all. The arms held securely in reserve must be able to defeat body armor ( Washington Post).

DOJ Wants To Investigate Border Patrol Team That Took Down Uvalde Shooter
Townhall: It has become increasingly evident that members of the Border Patrol, specifically those on the elite BORTAC team, defied orders from Uvalde police and breached the classroom the shooter was in at Robb Elementary School in order to stop the attack. The local police appeared to believe the situation had turned from an active shooter to a “barricaded” subject despite 9-1-1 calls being made by children who were trapped inside the classroom with the shooter. If not for the Border Patrol agents, the shooter could have claimed more lives. Now, House Democrats on the Homeland Security Committee want to investigate the agents’ role in killing the shooter ( Townhall). Anna: House Democrats intend to hold a hearing to determine exactly what legal authority Border Patrol/ICE agents had to have gotten involved in (and stopped) the Uvalde shooting and potential future incidents. At the same time, Homeland Dems “commend” federal agents for saving the day ( Twitter). Homeland: To better understand these important issues, we respectfully request a briefing on DHS’ approach to providing on-the-ground support to State and local law enforcement in these incidents and the steps the Department is planning to take in the wake of the Robb Elementary School massacre to help prevent violence in America’s schools ( Homeland).
