Mondaire Jones: Abolish Filibuster, Pack SCOTUS to Pass Gun Control

In a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Thursday, radical Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-NY) declared to Republicans that “you will not stop us” from passing major gun control legislation.

“Time after time, you have chosen your right to kill over our right to live,” he ranted, referring to Republicans. “You will not stop us from advancing the Protecting Our Kids Act today. You will not stop us from passing it in the House next week. And you will not stop us there. If the filibuster obstructs us, we will abolish it. If the Supreme Court objects, we will expand it. And we will not rest until we have taken weapons of war out of circulation out of our communities.”

House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jim Jordan (R-OH) said during his opening statement that Democrats merely want to score political points for their base: “The Democrats cobbled together a package of measures. This is not a real attempt, in my judgment, to find solutions. Everyone here knows the reality that Democrats are in control of the House. Anything that you and Speaker Pelosi want to pass, you can pass, and frankly you’ve already passed numerous bills related to firearms this Congress.

“But because those bills are radical attempts to legislate away Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens the Senate has not taken up the legislation. Just like it won’t take up this bill,” Jordan continued.

“What we are doing here is just designed to appeal to Democratic primary voters. The bill won’t make your school safer. It will hamper the rights of law-abiding citizens, and it will do nothing to stop mass shootings. We need to get serious about understanding why this keeps happening,” he correctly added.

Jones on Systemic Racism
  • “Institutional discrimination touches all facets of life in America, from health care to employment to criminal justice to housing. We must fight to achieve equality and dismantle systemic racism so that we are all able to participate fully in this society.”
  • “With law enforcement officers engaging in miscarriages of justice on both systemic and individual levels, I believe Congress has a responsibility to enact comprehensive federal oversight measures, in conjunction with state and local action. We must honor the memories of people unlawfully killed by the police by listening to the demands of their family members for justice, ensuring that law enforcement officers are held accountable, and moving towards a society where the institution of policing plays less of a role in Black and Brown communities. […] I support banning the consideration of criminal convictions in hiring decisions when the nature of the conviction is irrelevant to the job’s duties. […] It also means supporting the legalization and regulation of cannabis, as New York and other states have done.”
