Good Evening,

It's Thursday, June 2nd.

Russia Controls One-Fifth of Ukraine

As the war neared its 100th day, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian forces had seized 20 percent of his nation’s territory. Ukraine claimed a counteroffensive had made gains in the south, while Moscow tried to encircle a key city in the east, as the NYT reports.

War of Attrition

Speaking with reporters Thursday after meeting with President Biden at the White House, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called the conflict in Ukraine a “war of attrition” and said the alliance was preparing for the “long haul” when it came to helping Ukraine fight off Russia, as the Washington Post reports.

Saudi Oil Boost and Yemen Truce

Saudi Arabia took steps Thursday to boost oil production and extend a truce with Iran-backed forces in Yemen, two significant moves that help pave the way for President Biden to visit the kingdom later this month as the two countries try to reset their strained relationship, as the WSJ reports.

Critical Quote

“As of today, about 20 percent of our territory is under the control of the occupiers. If you look at the entire front line, and it is, of course, not straight, this line is more than a thousand kilometers. Just imagine!”

— Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky

Smiles

In 1974, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young were still at the peak of their powers as a band but they disagreed on how to perform their music in front of big crowds. The result was less harmony, more bickering and some their most power-laden performances with Stills and Young pushing the sonic limits. Decades later, the band would agree that the best performances of 74’ tour were worth compiling into a live record and some video footage. I wish I had been able to see this live.
