John, I want to tell you a story about Kina Collins, Sunrise’s endorsed candidate for IL-07.
In October 2021, after years of organizing for a Green New Deal, I went on hunger strike to demand that Joe Biden and the Democrats in Congress make good on their climate justice promises and pass the Build Back Better Act.
Kina Collins saw that a constituent in her district was demanding representation and action from their elected leaders. Kina showed up at a solidarity vigil hosted by Sunrise Chicago to meet my friends and family who were gathering to amplify the hunger strike.
Kina publicly supported and amplified our demands and our strike. But on the tenth day of my hunger strike, my pulse dropped dangerously low and I had to be taken to the hospital, where I learned I was at imminent risk of heart complications.
I made the tough decision to end my strike, and Kina was there to support me. She called me to ask how I was feeling and to hear my story. She invited me to meet with her in person when I returned to Chicago, and when I returned, she made good on her invitation.
Kina is incredible. She is exactly the kind of person I want fighting beside our movement in Congress. But she can only get there if she wins her tough primary against Danny Davis, a 25-year incumbent.

Kina understands that our communities need a Green New Deal so everyone can have a good union job, clean air, clean water, and a livable climate. The Green New Deal would be transformational for the West Side of Chicago and all of Illinois’ 7th District.
But John, this race is going to be close. The dark money outside spending and Democratic establishment are doing everything they can to defeat her. Just this week, I saw new ads on Facebook where an outside group dropped $125,000 to boost the establishment incumbent, who has been in Congress for my entire life.
Over the past 6 months, I’ve knocked on hundreds of doors and made hundreds of phone calls for Kina. People in our district are excited to vote for Kina when they hear about her. We just need to reach them.
In solidarity,
Paul, Sunrise
