Dear John,

We are running for office, but the work of governing continues full tilt! As you may remember from one of our May newsletters, Rep Nika filed several earmarks to the Transportation Bond Bill H4798 An Act Relative to Massachusetts Transportation and Climate that is currently referred to the Joint Committee on Bonding. We’re pleased to share that Rep Nika’s two district earmarks and two of her citywide earmarks made it into the House bill!

  • $75,000 for Jamaica Plain Centre/South Main Streets, Egleston Square Main Street, and Three Squares Main Street, our JP small business support organizations (Our Rozzie Village and Mission Hill Main Streets orgs got $25K each in the House Budget)

  • $50,000 for food distribution and support at Mildred C. Hailey

  • $500,000 for the Boston Housing Authority (BHA) to grant food security programs citywide that serve Boston public housing residents

  • $1,000,000 to the BHA for infrastructure renovations to reduce emissions and reliance on fossil fuels and to secure accessibility improvements across all BHA housing.

These bonds, once approved by the Senate and Governor, will provide key financing for drawing down the competitive infrastructure money coming from Congress. Thank you to our community and our team who help make these victories possible!

Yesterday was the  Joint Committee on Bonding, Capital Expenditures and State Assets Hearing on the Transportation Bond Bill released this week. Rep Nika just testified in support of extending the E-Line to Canary Square, accessibility improvements on the MBTA, targeting public works pre-apprenticeship programming to formerly incarcerated and green jobs, and citing data and oversight to ensure environmental grants (e.g., for charging stations, e-bikes access) and active transit (e.g., cycling or pedestrian infrastructure) go to underserved communities. Submit questions to the Committee staff at [email protected] or  [email protected].

As Rep Nika is working hard to ensure House leadership is informed about the resources our communities require, Team Nika is working hard to make sure the new district connects the importance of bonds and other policies to our everyday experiences.

Please DONATE today to help us out! And thank you for your support and partnership!!

Best,
Isabel Torres
