[ [link removed] ]Welch for Vermont

Hello,

My colleagues and I are hard at work in the House, voting to pass
legislation that would make a tangible difference in the lives of
Vermonters across the state.

But time and time again, we’ve seen Republicans stand in the way of
progress. We can overcome their obstructionist agenda if we make one basic
change to the Senate rules.

Here’s one example that’s urgent: I’ve cosponsored the Women’s Health
Protection Act (WHPA), which passed the House and would codify abortion
rights nationwide, no matter what the Supreme Court rules on Roe this
month.

But the Republican minority blocks critical bills like the WHPA time and
time again through the filibuster. This means the bills can’t pass the
Senate, and aren’t sent to the president to sign into law. As a result,
the Republicans continually stand in the way of progress, and the
filibuster is to blame.

[ [link removed] ]We must eliminate the filibuster. Add your name to our petition right
away if you agree.

Even with Democrats holding the majority, the filibuster allows for
minority rule. Senate Republicans have filibustered more than just the
WHPA. They’ve also employed it to block raising the minimum wage,
protecting the right to vote, and passing common-sense gun safety reform.

These bills have broad support from folks across Vermont and the
country—which is why I’ve fought so hard to pass them in the House. But
Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans are fighting for failure, and we’re
all suffering as a result.

The filibuster has to go. It’s a relic from the Jim Crow era, used by
segregationists to block civil rights. It continues to undermine our
democracy and it’s time to abolish it.

If I become Vermont’s next senator, I will vote to end the filibuster so
we can protect Americans’ basic rights and deliver results for families.
But I can’t win this fight by myself—we all need to raise our voices.

Thanks,

Peter
