Thank you for another successful school year in these difficult times

Get our endorsements for Tuesday's Primary Election! If State Superintendent Tony Thurmond (above center) wins more than 50% of the vote, the election will be over. Your vote can help reelect Thurmond so he can continue his work, uninterrupted, to help California students and educators recover from the pandemic and succeed.

Thank you for succeeding in another academic year. The last couple of years have been incredibly difficult and stressful, but never forget the work you do every day makes a difference.

PreK-12 Schools

The ABC Federation was headed toward a strike for the first time in three decades, after uncharacteristically tough negotiations with a new school board. Instead the local did a work-to-rule campaign. And 400 teachers showed up before the board.

The mood was upbeat at the Custodial & Skilled Trades Conference, but the sessions were sobering. Workshops probed on-the-job challenges such as powerful chemicals, extreme weather, and rampaging shooters.

Community College

A crowd of more than 100 members strong — some seasoned part-timers with decades of experience, others new adjuncts for which this was their first union event — were engaged as the CFT Part-Time Faculty Conference opened to roars and cheers with its theme of “Equity for Contingent Faculty.”

Our findings show that only a fraction of part-timers receive health benefits despite making up 70% of faculty ranks.

University

Two new UC-AFT vice presidents have been elected, both of whom are contingent faculty from campuses that have not been previously represented — UC Merced and UC Irvine. And more firsts — the first woman of color and first labor historian.

Retired

With days to go until the June 7 Primary Election, CFT retirees are already looking ahead to November — educating younger Americans about the history of voter suppression, phone banking, and lobbying to repeal the unfair WEP and GPO.
