Dear John,
As you may know, the American Immigration Council grew this year. With our expanded capacity, we can now focus on bringing immigration reform to the state and local level too—even in unexpected places.
We want to introduce you to this new work by diving into our efforts in Utah, one of the most reliably conservative states in the nation. Through a variety of tactics, we’ve been able to build from the ground up to make Utah into a more welcoming place for immigrants and refugees.
The Council’s combined efforts—through organizing, research, legal support, and narrative change—has already yielded real change in the Beehive State.

Storytelling
The storytelling team partnered with the office of Utah Governor Spencer Cox on a piece in Fortune outlining the steps states can take to welcome refugees. |
The Immigration Justice Campaign
IJC launched a partnership with the Salt Lake City office of the International Rescue Committee to match resettled Afghan asylum seekers with pro bono representation for their asylum cases. |
Research
Our Research team released a new fact sheet on the immigrant population in Utah in collaboration with the Economic Development Corporation of Utah at the launch of the state’s New American Task Force. |
The Center for Inclusion and Belonging
CIB is providing technical support to the Center for Economic Opportunity and Belonging on their state-wide “Belong in Utah” campaign, which aims to collect and broadcast stories of belonging across the state. The effort was inspired by the Council’s national “Belonging Begins With Us” campaign. |
State and Local
Our State and Local team has been organizing in Utah for over a decade, supporting the establishment of the Salt Lake County Mayor’s Office for New Americans and the reaffirmation of the Utah Compact. One of the team’s most recent efforts included a convening of high-level stakeholders to connect resettlement agencies, state government, national philanthropy, and the private sector to coordinate support for Afghan arrivals. |

We couldn’t do this work without you. When you donate to the Council, you’re helping create real change in local communities that need it most—not just in Washington. Consider making a gift today:
