March for Our Lives!

The students from Parkland are organizing another March for Our Lives.

“We are done waiting. On June 11th, we are once again taking to the streets in DC and in sibling marches across the country to demand our political leaders take action to end gun violence. If you were with us in 2018, we need you with us right now.

This isn’t a Republican or Democrat issue. This is about kids dying.

Our political leaders have shown a callous disregard for our lives by refusing to take action to end gun violence. The result of their inaction has been preventable tragedies and innocent lives lost. We will not wait any longer. This time it will be different.

We do not have to keep living this way. We need our political leaders on both sides of the aisle to work together to pass common-sense gun safety legislation. On June 11th we’ll send a message to them collectively: we demand action now.”

The nearest March is in Melbourne at West Melbourne Community Park, 3000 Minton Rd, Melbourne, FL 32904 from 12:00 p.m. to 3 p.m. Here is more information on that: [link removed]

Volunteer Opportunity

We are looking to reach out to Democrats who don’t have cell phones that we can text. We will be doing this outreach via phone calls. If you are interested in volunteering for this initiative, please email Stacey at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected])

School Board Candidate

Do you want to get rid of the Mom’s for Liberty representative, Jackie Rosario, from the school board? Are you tired of public education being attacked? Then we need your help!

It's time to knock on doors and spread the word about School Board Candidate Cindy Gibbs! Get your feet in some comfortable shoes and let's start talking to people about why Cindy is the best choice for our students and staff. We will be going out every Tuesday in June, July, and August. Sign up here: [link removed]

Cindy also needs our help on fundraising. It will take a lot to be competitive in the race against Jackie Rosario. We ask that you copy and paste the letter below and email it to your like-minded friends who share Democratic values. Especially those who are pro-public education. Let’s show Indian River that we support our candidates and believe Democrats are viable candidates too!

Dear Friends,
I am writing to ask you to join me in supporting candidate Cindy Gibbs who is running for Indian River County School Board, District 2.
Cindy believes:
* Public schools are the foundations of a strong community; helping families to thrive and where children learn the knowledge and skills needed to become valued members of our society and the economy.
* Public schools must be properly funded and staffed for a whole host of reasons–salaries, school infrastructure and safety, learning materials, support staff and more.
* Public schools serve ALL children, so ALL children must feel safe in our schools, regardless of socio-economic status. family organization, gender, sexual orientation, and religious beliefs.

As a wife, a mother of two Indian River County Schools students, and an experienced educator, Cindy has seen the classroom from inside and outside. This unique perspective makes her the best choice for the work.

I’m asking that you consider a donation to Cindy’s campaign. Donations can be made on her website via ActBlue at

You can learn more about Cindy on her website at
gibbs4schools.com or call her at (772) 228-0252 to talk about her campaign and how you can support it.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

This week, Precinct Captain Joe McManus submitted the letter below to the TCPalm. Remember, if we stay quiet and don’t speak out, we become complacent. PLEASE write a letter to the editor and speak up. If you would like to write a letter to the editor, you can submit your letter here:

Joe’s letter:

The sickening murders of innocent children and their teachers in Uvalde raises the question, yet again: What must we do to prevent mass shootings in America?

Some say we must harden our schools and businesses. Others say we must arm teachers and civilians, or that we need only to address mental health issues and lock some doors. Yet none of these actions address the core reason why our country leads the world in mass shootings, to wit, the ease with which semi-automatic firearms and high capacity magazines can be purchased in America.

The shooters at Uvalde, Buffalo, Parkland, Houston, Sandy Hook and Columbine were all under 21 years of age; a national minimum age requirement of 21 for the purchase of firearms is clearly warranted.

Moreover, polls show that most Americans favor additional common sense firearms regulations, like universal background checks, closing gun show loopholes, enacting a national red-flag law, requiring a license for gun purchases, and banning the sale of semi-automatic weapons and high capacity magazines.

Ultimately, we must ask and answer a fundamental question: How can gun rights secure for us the values of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness when the shooting deaths of our most innocent and vulnerable continue unabated?

The idea that the constitutional right to bear arms is absolute and doesn’t allow for any regulation finds little support in the SCOTUS Heller decision, in which Justice Scalia wrote, “The Court’s opinion should not be taken to cast doubt on longstanding…laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms.”

Most Americans understand that mass shootings are predictable and preventable. We want government to do something. Call Senators Rubio and Scott. Tell them we want federal gun regulation and we want it now!
