U.S. Surgeon General Releases Recommendations for Addressing Health Care Worker Burnout
U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy released
new recommendations for addressing burnout and other factors
contributing to shortages. The recommendations focus on not only what the health
care sector can do, but also what the whole of society can do to address these issues.
Recommendations include eliminating punitive policies for seeking
mental health and substance use disorder care, providing suggestions on how to
transform workplace culture to empower health workers and be responsive to their
voices and needs as well as investing in public health and the public health workforce.
The recommendations are in support of and in alignment with
the Biden-Harris administration’s Global Health Initiative that was announced in early May. The Global Health Initiative acknowledges
the importance of a strong health care workforce and is charged with developing
“a global health workforce plan, to accelerate [the administration’s] contributions
to the Sustainable Development Agenda and investments in health and care workers.”
