Covenant House Alaska

Below is an excerpt from an article by Sam Buisman, Covenant House Alaska Staff Writer

"Person-first language at Covenant House Alaska.

With its advocacy-steeped history and lab-proven effects, we at Covenant House Alaska strive to use this language to affirm the personhood of our youth, encourage their acceptance in our community, and inspire activism within our readers.

Our principle of unconditional love compels us to do everything we can to serve those in our care with the dignity they deserve, even if it is something as small as being a little more careful in how we talk.

If it uplifts our youth, we will do it  — even if it means it’s more difficult to Tweet."

Municipality of Anchorage (MOA)

Final Piece of Anchorage's COVID-19 Response to End June 30 Sullivan Arena to Resume Normal Operations

Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson announced that the Municipality of Anchorage will end its pandemic congregate shelter operations at the Sullivan Arena effective June 30, 2022. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic thrust the Muni into providing adequate shelter options for those affected by the virus. When COVID-19 arrived in Anchorage, local nonprofit shelters did not have the capacity to meet physical distancing requirements, and thus the Sullivan Arena was stood up to fill the gap. Since March 2020, the Sullivan Arena has been operating as a temporary shelter and congregate site, housing many residents affected by the pandemic.

Given the significantly diminished impact the virus is having on the community, lack of emergency declarations at the local and state level, and FEMA's reimbursement of COVID related expenses ending on July 1, 2022, the Muni is moving forward with a comprehensive plan to transition those at the Sullivan Arena into viable housing options.

Navigation Center Community Meeting To Be Held Wednesday, June 22nd

The Municipality of Anchorage is hosting a community meeting for the public to allow the community to provide input and ask questions to learn more about the Navigation Center. The meeting will be held at the Wilda Marston Theatre in the Loussac Library (3600 Denali Street) on Wednesday, June 22nd from 5:30PM to 7:30PM. The MOA and DOWL will be on hand to give a presentation and answer questions.

The Navigation Center is the first step in a plan outlined by the joint work of the Mayor, the Legislative Drafting Group, and the Assembly Housing and Homeless Commission.  The Navigation Center is an approximate 27,000 square foot fabric structure facility proposed to be located adjacent to the Anchorage Police Department building at the southeast corner of the intersection of Tudor and Elmore.  The facility will provide housing and support services to provide food and shelter to people who are at risk or currently experiencing homelessness and connect them with the resources they need to get to permanent housing.
