ALETHA Y. AKERS | I read the draft decision by the Supreme Court in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and wondered what my ancestors would think of us—the U.S.—at this moment.
I knew immediately what one might think. Her name is Lillie and her story motivates my work as an obstetrician-gynecologist and as an advocate for sexual and reproductive rights globally. She would say that history is repeating itself after learning little from its past.

‘Wake Up, America’: Remembering Dr. George Tiller, Assassinated Abortion Practitioner [[link removed]]
BY DR. WARREN HERN | Dr. George Tiller is one of many American abortion doctors to be assassinated by “pro-life” anti-abortion fanatics. Others, such as Emily Lyons, have been maimed for life.

Racial Justice Tops the Agenda of Young AAPI Women Candidates [[link removed]]
BY DIANA HWANG | As a 20-year-old college sophomore, Zainab Khan first started working at the Georgia State Capitol as a legislative aide for former state Representative Brenda Lopez-Romero in 2018—she had high hopes to find her way. Meetings with lobbyists who would refuse to shake her hand, and racist comments and microaggressions wore her down. Eventually, she had enough and left.
Khan’s story reminds me of my own. When I got my first job out of college as a legislative aide at the Massachusetts State House, I remember telling my dad I got my dream job. Instead of being excited for me, he said, “You’ll never be one of them.” His response stung, but I understood it was rooted in his immigrant experience—the feeling of not being seen or heard, of being rendered silent to survive and fit into a country that never seemed to accept him.

In May, we learned in a leaked draft opinion that the Supreme Court is expected to overturn Roe v. Wade — profoundly dismantling abortion rights in the U.S. Released in conjunction with our Beyond Roe project, experts explore why abortion is essential to the health of our democracy and society — and why democracy is essential to abortion, particularly given the alarming rates of maternal mortality and morbidity in the U.S.
