LIFT the BAR Introduced Last Week!
PIF is delighted to share that the LIFT the BAR Act (S.4311) was introduced in the U.S. Senate last week by Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) and nine original cosponsors: Booker (D-NJ), Brown (D-OH), Gillibrand (D-NY), Leahy (D-VT), Markey (D-MA), Murray, (D-WA), Padilla (D-CA), Sanders (D-VT) and Warren (D-MA). You can read PIF’s official statement on the introduction here.
We are proud to stand with more than 750 national, state and local organizations who signed on in support of this legislation -- click here to read the final letter. We delivered the sign-on letter to Congress this week. It shows loud and clear that there is support from all 50 states + DC for removing the 5-year bar. To all of our partners who signed on, THANK YOU!
For more background on the LIFT the BAR Act, we have one pagers and resources available on our LTBA Resources page and in our LTBA Partner Tool Kit! PIF's statement on the bill introduction is available here.
There are three things you can do right now to show your support for the LIFT the BAR Act:
-
Encourage your Senator and Representative to co-sponsor LTBA. You could schedule a meeting with staff or email them your thoughts. Tools and resources, including sample emails, are in the Partner Tool Kit.
-
Send your own endorsement letter to your Congressional delegation--and be sure to attach the PIF sign-on letter!
-
If your Senator has already signed on, use social media to thank your members for co-sponsoring using #LIFTtheBAR and #ProtectFamilies!
Over the next weeks we'll share more resources to lift up this important legislation; identify potential new cosponsors; and share strategies to keep up momentum for addressing the 5-year bar. But for now, congratulations on the historic introduction of this legislation and thank you for your help.
