Dear friend of the Journal,

Earth Island Journal is an environmental magazine. We care deeply about protecting our planet. However, as a Journal reader, you’ve seen that environmentalism doesn’t end where other issues begin.

As I mentioned in a recent newsletter, women of color and lower-income women will bear the brunt of a Roe v. Wade reversal. And these are the same women who already face disproportionate exposure to environmental hazards.

Unfortunately, this assault on our rights is far from over. It is part of a decades-long campaign, one that I fear will also result in rulings that restrict our ability to tackle the climate crisis.

We cannot throw in the towel. We must fight for women’s rights and climate justice. Independent media like Earth Island Journal are an essential resource in this fight. Will you stand with us?
Yes! I'll support the Green Journalism Fund!
Here’s a question to consider: What would our world look like if the big media outlets didn’t jam complex, multi-faceted issues into the obsolete framework of this side says this versus the other side says that?

What if our highest paid media figures talked about how farmers in America are struggling, not just financially but also with their mental health?

What if the Sunday talk shows featured Sharon Lavigne, the former special education teacher who started a faith-based environmental justice organization to fight not one, but two petrochemical companies from expanding into her community?

Rather than two professional talking heads shouting over one another, what if the prime time cable news shows had nuanced, personal discussions like this one, about the decision to have or not have children as the climate crisis worsens?

Stories like these help us understand complex and intertwined issues — like the climate crisis and women's rights — so that we can think critically and hold our government accountable. If we don’t understand how these issues affect our fellow citizens, how can we possibly act — and vote — to protect our planet and build a more just society?

At Earth Island Journal, we’re grateful our supporters are passionate about building a better world, from addressing the climate crisis to standing up to injustice. Donating even a small amount each month adds up. Can we count on you?
